Western Sydney Wanderers success a fairytale for A-League

Marcello Lippi has had a remarkable coaching career, but even the best know failure. Winning the World Cup in 2006 is as good as it gets, and only he can say whether that triumph was made retrospectively sweeter by the first-round elimination four years later.

That World Cup was, he said, the only thing in his career to outrank the Asian Champions League win of the past year. That is another title he will now not be able to defend. In August, his Guangzhou Evergrande team were dumped out of the...

Marcello Lippi cops one match ban

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Italian coach Marcello Lippi has been provisionally suspended for one match for confronting a referee Guangzhou Evergrande's 1-0 loss in Sydney to the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Asian Champions League quarterfinals.

Lippi, who coached Italy to the World Cup title in 2006, will be banned from sitting in the dugout during Guangzhou's home leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The Asian Football Confederation announced the provisional ban on Sunday, saying the final decision...

Wanderers spoil Kewell's farewell match

Harry Kewell of the Heart is lifted off the field after playing his final match and retiring from football during the round 27 A-League match between Melbourne Heart and the Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park on April 12, 2014 in Melbourne, Australia.
Harry Kewell played the final game of his career as Melbourne Heart lost 3-2 to Western Sydney Warriors.

Western Sydney Wanderers ruined Harry Kewell's farewell party as they scored twice late on to beat the Melbourne Heart 3-2 at AAMI Stadium

Kewell's final game following a glittering career -- including two World Cup finals appearances and winning the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool -- looked set to end with a win as the Heart led 2-1 with 10 minutes...
