Wellington Phoenix climb to second, Central Coast beat Melbourne City

Joy for Wellington after Manny Muscat's opening goal.

Wellington Phoenix moved up to second in the A-League standings with a 3-0 victory over Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

The New Zealanders secured their ninth win of the season thanks to a first-half goal from Manny Muscat and a second-half brace from Jeremy Brockie.

The Phoenix trail A-League leaders Perth Glory by four points, although they have played a game more.

In the day's other game, Central Coast Mariners were 2-0 winners against Melbourne City.

Western Sydney Wanderers beaten by Wellington Phoenix

The Western Sydney Wanderers' miserable season continued as they were edged out 1-0 on Sunday by the Wellington Phoenix, who enjoyed plenty of good fortune.

Wellington were awarded a soft penalty when Roy Krishna fell under pressure from Daniel Alessi, and Krishna then saw his spot-kick saved by Ante Covic before firing in the rebound for the only goal in the 14th minute.

Forgotten man Nathan Burns selected in Australia squad for Asian Cup

Wellington Phoenix forward Nathan Burns has been included in the 23-man Socceroos squad for the AFC Asian Cup on Australian soil.

The A-League's top scorer Nathan Burns has forced his way into the final 23-man squad of host nation Australia for next month's AFC Asian Cup.

The Wellington Phoenix attacker is one of seven players from Australia's domestic competition to make the cut. But there is no place for the Melbourne City pair of Aaron Mooy and Josh Kennedy, Western Sydney's Nikita Rukavytsya or Perth Glory teenager Daniel De Silva.
