Unpaid wages, furious fans and 41 winless games: How Veracruz became the worst club in men's pro soccer

VERACRUZ, Mexico -- In a sense, it was the perfect backdrop for Veracruz' final home game of 2019 in Liga MX. A "norte" -- a peculiar local term for a storm coming down off the Gulf of Mexico -- helped wrap up a year in which Los Tiburones Rojos has played 17 Liga MX matches in Estadio Luis "Pirata" Fuente, scored 11 goals and conceded 32 times, picking up a total of six points.

Rain swept almost vertically across the run-down stadium on that Friday, Nov. 8, soaking spectators before kickoff against...

Violence, mismanaged protests, gunfights: Veracruz's problems cap off horror weekend for Mexican soccer

MEXICO CITY -- A child crying in the arms of his mother on the field of Estadio Alfonso Lastras presented an appropriate visual representation of what was a nightmare weekend for Mexican soccer.

Violence, mismanaged protests and a suspended game capped off a weekend that the Mexican federation (FMF) and Liga MX will want to move on from as quickly as possible but will need to learn from moving forward. These were events that flew in the face of the idea that the Mexican game is modernizing and...

Veracruz players give up two goals while protesting unpaid wages

Veracruz players protested unpaid wages by refusing to play for the first 4 minutes and 20 seconds of Friday's 3-1 Liga MX home loss against Tigres, giving up two early goals in the process.

Tigres' players joined the protest for the first 60 seconds, but then began to play after goalkeeper Sebastian Jurado kicked the ball away and ceded possession.

Tigres' Eduardo Vargas kicked the ball into an empty net at 1:39, and Andre-Pierre Gignac added the second past motionless goalkeeper Jurado at 3:55....

Liga MX club Veracruz players set to go on strike, miss Friday's match against Tigres

Veracruz players are threatening to strike over unpaid wages.

Players from Liga MX's last-placed side Veracruz are vowing to boycott Friday's game against Tigres due to unpaid wages stretching back months, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

The Liga MX club is without a league win in 39 games and the ownership has had problems paying wages, leading the players to take action.

"Footballers from the Tiburones Rojos del Veracruz have agreed not to play the next fixture of the 2019 Apertura against Tigres, a decision supported emphatically by the Mexican Footballers...

Meza leaves Veracruz on 33-game winless run

Herculez Gomez explains why the new Leagues Cup is a first step toward more direct competition between MLS and Liga MX.

Veracruz extended its winless Liga MX run to 33 games on Tuesday in its 5-0 defeat to Queretaro and is now looking for a new manager after the resignation of veteran head coach Enrique Meza was confirmed on Wednesday.

Club owner Fidel Kuri announced he'd accepted Meza's resignation in a public letter, bringing an end to a reign that only began in June.

The under-fire owner indicated it wouldn't be just to only blame Meza for the club's abysmal form, slamming what he labeled the "deciduous" and "inefficient"...
