Da Silva's seventh minute effort was cancelled out eight minutes from half-time by Syrian striker Omar Khribin to leave Urawa with the upper hand going into the return at Saitama Stadium next week.

Urawa Red Diamonds will hope to take a huge stride towards ending their 10-year continental title drought when Takafumi Hori's side prepare to face off against Al Hilal in the first leg of their AFC Champions League (ACL) final in Riyadh on Saturday evening.

Urawa became the first Japanese side to win the competition since the beginning of the ACL era in 2002, and following in the footsteps of Jubilo Iwata in becoming only the second J-League side to be crowned Asia's champion club.

Rafael Da Silva scores for Urawa vs. SIPG
Urawa Reds advanced to the ACL final thanks to Rafael Silva's first-half strike in the second leg.

Rafael Silva scored the goal that took Urawa Red Diamonds into the final of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday evening as the Brazilian's header earned Takafumi Hori's side a 1-0 win over Shanghai SIPG, and a meeting next month with Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal.

Silva's 11th minute effort secured a 2-1 aggregate win over the two legs for the 2007 champions. They will be seeking to become the first Japanese winners since Gamba Osaka claimed the title in 2008.

Andre Villas-Boas is expecting an attacking game as Shanghai SIPG take on Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds with both clubs looking to book a place in the final of the AFC Champions League.

The teams played out a 1-1 draw in Shanghai three weeks ago to give Urawa a slender advantage but, with both teams having scored regularly throughout the campaign, the former Chelsea manager is expecting more of the same at Saitama Stadium on Wednesday evening.
