Tigres get Ismael Sosa from Pumas in Liga MX draft

Argentina native Ismael Sosa will now play for Tuca Ferretti at Tigres.

The transfers of Argentina native players Ismael Sosa, Silvio Romero and Alfonso Arturo "Ponchito" Gonzalez were the main surprises on Wednesday in the Liga MX draft held in Cancun.

A total of 75 transactions were completed over 12 hours with about $53 million spent in all of the negotiations. The big winners of the night were clubs like Leon, who completed six moves, and defending champion Pachuca, who brought in talented Mexican players such as Raul Lopez from Chivas and Erick Aguirre from Monarcas...

Sporting Kansas City, Vancouver Whitecaps drawn together in CCL

Kekuta Manneh and the Vancouver Whitecaps will take part in the CCL later this year.

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting Kansas City have been drawn together in the same group for the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League.

CONCACAF held the draw for the 2016-17 edition of the competition in Miami Beach on Monday night.

The four teams each from the United States and Mexico were separated into each of the eight groups, meaning the Whitecaps, who qualified by winning the 2015 Canadian Championship, were guaranteed to be drawn with either a fellow MLS side or a team from Liga MX.

Independiente progress as Ismael Sosa proves hero and villain for Pumas

Independiente
Independiente celebrate after the penalty shootout.

The fairytale goes on. Little Independiente del Valle of Ecuador are through to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores, after eliminating Pumas of Mexico on penalties.

As so often in football, the line between success and failure proved wafer thin. Back in February, Independiente could hardly have come closer to falling in the qualifying round. With the last kick of the game in Asuncion, Guarani of Paraguay were given a penalty; up stepped Uruguayan Hernan Rodrigo Lopez, vastly experienced and...

Independiente deny Pumas excellent chance at Copa Libertadores semis

Independiente del Valle players celebrate
Ismael Sosa's brace was not enough to send Pumas through to the final four in the Copa Libertadores.

MEXICO CITY -- Pumas have joined Morelia, Xolos, Chiapas and Atlas as Liga MX clubs who were only able to reach the quarterfinal stage of the Copa Libertadores.

After 180 minutes of play that finished with an aggregate score of 3-3, Independiente del Valle defeated Pumas from the penalty spot 5-3.

Independiente will face either Boca Juniors, Atletico Nacional or Sao Paulo in Libertadores semifinals.

Here are three takes after Pumas fell agonizingly short of progression:

Independiente del Valle have guaranteed their spot in the Copa Libertadores semis after defeating Pumas UNAM on penalties in Tuesday's quarterfinal second leg.

The unfancied Ecuadorian side lost 2-1 at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario but with the aggregate result tied at 3-3 the match went to penalties.

Pumas appeared to be cruising in the first half, with a three-minute brace from Ismael Sosa putting the hosts well in control.

The contest then looked to be over in the 56th minute when Los Negriazules...
