CONCACAF Champions League: Toronto FC shocked; Saprissa beat Tigres, Houston Dynamo win

Club Atletico Independiente shocked Toronto FC 4-0 in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday.

The Canadian club had not played a competitive match since the end of the 2018 MLS regular season and it showed at Estadio Agustin Sanchez. The Panamanian hosts and competition debutantes jumped to an early lead when Abdiel Ayarza scored in the ninth minute.

Toronto's newly acquired striker Terrence Boyd had a chance to equalize on a penalty kick in the 31st minute but the...

Portland Timbers 'moving on' from pursuit of Tigres Eduardo Vargas - source

Ahead of the 2019 season, coaches from around MLS share their views on how to define success in the evolving league.

The Portland Timbers are prepared to move on from their pursuit of Tigres forward Eduardo Vargas, a club source with direct knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN FC.

The Timbers' bid for Vargas was thought to include a transfer fee just under $10 million, but the source indicated that Portland's offer was actually $8.5m including incentives.

The source added that Tigres has a higher valuation of the player, but are keen to move Vargas, and could circle back to the Timbers if they decide...

Monterrey, Tigres, Santos Laguna, Toluca: A guide to Liga MX in CONCACAF Champions League

It's no secret that Liga MX clubs have dominated North America's top club competition. Since the beginning of the "Champions League" era of the CONCACAF tournament in 2008, Mexican teams have amassed 10 titles in the 10 editions of the event. This year, four Liga MX teams will be tasked with making it 11 out of 11: Tigres, Santos Laguna, Monterrey and Toluca.

Ahead of the start of the Round of 16 in the CONCACAF Champions League, here's a quick guide to all four Liga MX clubs:

Portland Timbers make $10 million move for Tigres' Chile international Eduardo Vargas

Ahead of the 2019 season, coaches from around MLS share their views on how to define success in the evolving league.

The Portland Timbers' pursuit of a Designated Player forward has led them to Tigres' Eduardo Vargas, league sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

Univision Deportes was the first to report Portland's interest in Vargas. Portland declined to comment on the story.

One source indicated that Portland's bid for Vargas is just under $10 million, though sources cautioned the deal hasn't been finalized. If the deal is completed, the transfer fee would rank among the highest in MLS history for an incoming player...

Monterrey, Tigres lavish spending shows Liga MX's decreasing parity

As MLS and Liga MX mull a new tournament like the SuperLiga of the mid-2000s, Taylor Twellman says the time is right for a new competition.

Tigres visit Veracruz and Monterrey host Lobos BUAP this weekend in round six of games in the 2019 Apertura and in Liga MX terms, it doesn't get much more David vs. Goliath. The "anyone can win" aspect of Liga MX has been cited as one of the strengths of the league compared to others around the world, but when the two Clasico Regio teams face off against respective minnows Veracruz and Lobos BUAP, it puts the gulf between teams at the top and bottom of the Liga MX under the microscope.
