Fortuna Dusseldorf won 3-2 at Nurnberg to win Germany's second division on Sunday, while Eintracht Braunschweig were relegated to the third tier.

Kaan Ayhan's injury-time winner for Dusseldorf ensured his side finished three points ahead of second-placed Nurnberg.

Both sides were already assured of promotion to the Bundesliga's top flight ahead of the final round of games.

Holstein Kiel, already assured of third place, defeated Braunschweig 6-2 to send the visiting side to the third division along...

Mario Gomez celebrates his first leg goal for Wolfsburg against Eintracht Braunschweig.

Mario Gomez was upset by Eintracht Braunschweig supporters singling him out in the relegation-promotion playoffs and said he was made to feel "like a criminal."

Wolfsburg twice beat local rivals Braunschweig 1-0 after finishing third-from-bottom in the Bundesliga and getting the chance to secure another year of top-flight football in the German relegation-promotion playoffs.

Last Thursday, Gomez helped his side to win the first leg 1-0 with a controversial penalty, and later claimed that it was...

Wolfsburg clinched Bundesliga survival by beating Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0, giving the side a 2-0 victory on aggregate in their relegation-promotion playoff on Monday.

Vieirinha's powerful strike after the break gave the visiting side a comfortable cushion, after Mario Gomez gave Wolfsburg a 1-0 win at home in the first leg.

"We achieved the absolute minimum. I can understand the players' relief, but it's not a success," said Andries Jonker, Wolfsburg's third coach of the season.

Stuttgart and Hannover confirm promotion back to Bundesliga

Stuttgart coach Hannes Wolf is soaked in beer as the celebrations begin.

Stuttgart defeated Wurzburg 4-1 at home to return to the Bundesliga as 2. Bundesliga champions on Sunday, and were joined in the top flight by runners-up Hannover.

Daniel Ginczek set up three goals and scored the fourth for Stuttgart as the 2007 Bundesliga champions finished with 69 points and relegated their opponents.

Hannover, who drew 1-1 at Sandhausen, ended on 67 as both clubs, relegated from the Bundesliga last season, bounced straight back.

Mario Gomez scored a 35th-minute penalty as Wolfsburg built a slender advantage in the first leg of their Bundesliga playoff with Eintracht Braunschweig.

Gomez slotted the spot-kick past visiting keeper Jasmin Fejzic, who had earlier pulled off good saves to deny Wolfsburg pair Yunus Malli and Daniel Didavi.

Braunschweig were unhappy with referee Sascha Stegemann's decision to award the penalty. Gomez had already handled the ball to try and control it, and there was little Valsvik could do to Yunus...
