Mikel joins Trabzonspor on free transfer

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has joined Turkish club Trabzonspor on a two-year deal with an option for another year, the club announced on Sunday night.

Mikel, 32, joins on a free transfer from Middlesbrough after his short-term deal ran out at the end of last season.

The midfielder, who made 18 Championship appearances for Boro, spent over 10 years in the Premier League with Chelsea before leaving for China where he played the last two seasons with Tianjin TEDA.

Liverpool face Premier League competition to sign "Turkish Messi" Abdulkadir Omur from Trabzonspor, sources have told ESPN FC.

Trabzonspor's transfer ban stems from an unpaid fee for Matus Bero.

FIFA has imposed a transfer ban on Trabzonspor, keeping the Turkish club from registering new players during the next window.

The ban was imposed after the club missed a 30-day deadline to settle an unpaid transfer fee to Slovakian club Trencin, FIFA said.

FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo said he would be open to using the top spot in the MLS allocation order to bring back former FCD and current Trabzonspor midfielder Fabian Castillo.
