The result gives second seed Tigres a slight advantage heading into Saturday's second leg in Estadio Universitario, with the away goals rule in place for the Liga MX playoffs.

Vargas received the ball from Jesus Duenas on the edge of the penalty area in the 76th minute and shot low into the right-hand corner of the goal.

Liga MX playoffs W2W4: Monterrey are favorites but expect the unexpected

Max Bretos and Herculez Gomez preview Monterrey's outlook for the Liguilla and explain why they're excited to watch American-born Jonathan Gonzalez.

The Liga MX playoffs are now set!

With an eye on the 2017 Apertura title, eight teams are now left in the championship race: Monterrey, Tigres, Morelia, Toluca, Club America, Cruz Azul, Leon and Atlas. The first legs of the quarterfinal round take place this Wednesday and Thursday, so all eight clubs have little time to prepare for the much-anticipated knockout stage.

Although there's rarely a lack of drama or entertainment, here are five things you won't want to miss.

Liga MX W2W4: Tigres' home streak will be put to the test against Toluca

To become a playoff contender, Rafael Puente and Lobos BUAP must find a way to defeat Cruz Azul on Saturday.

Ahead of this weekend's action, ESPN FC's Liga MX writers Tom Marshall, Nayib Moran and Eric Gomez look ahead to some of the league's biggest matchups and storylines.

Lobos BUAP vs. Cruz Azul

This game pits the two most intriguing sides so far this Apertura and two managers in Rafael Puente and Paco Jemez who don't have a reverse gear.

A total of 45 goals -- 20 for and 25 against -- have been scored in games involving Lobos BUAP so far this season, a full five more than next-highest Pachuca.
