Jorge Jesus' mystique in Portugal wavering with his Sporting on the brink

One year ago, many in Portugal were saying Jorge Jesus had overtaken Jose Mourinho as the best Portuguese manager. Jesus had won everything at Benfica, sensationally and acrimoniously walked out for fierce Lisbon rivals Sporting CP, and subsequently led the Lions to a flying start to the season. Now, following a third defeat in four games for Sporting, few would dare to utter such a notion.

A nightmare fortnight has seen Jesus' team knocked out of the Champions League by Legia Warsaw, beaten 2-1...

A number of European clubs had scouts at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton were among a host of clubs scouting at Benfica's 2-1 derby win over Sporting Lisbon on Sunday, sources close to the Eagles have told ESPN FC.

Scouts from United have been regular visitors to Portugal this season as they keep a close eye on Benfica trio Victor Lindelof, Nelson Semedo and Goncalo Guedes.

Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is actively looking to bolster his defensive options in January and Swedish centre-back Lindelof is reportedly among his top targets.

Guilherme's goal ended Sporting's run in Europe this season as Legia Warsaw beat them 1-0.

Legia Warsaw secured a place in the Europa League at the expense of 10-man Sporting Lisbon after a 1-0 Champions League Group F win at the Polish Army Stadium.

Both teams were already out of the Champions League but the Portuguese side needed just a draw to progress to the second-tier tournament but Marques Guilherme's strike ensured it was Legia who advanced.

Sporting made the brighter start and William Carvalho dragged a pair of shots narrowly wide inside the opening three minutes before Adrien...
