Manchester United have announced the signing of goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from League One club Southend United.

Twenty-year-old Bishop, who also plays for England U20s, joins United on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

"The opportunity to join Manchester United is a dream come true," Bishop said in a statement.

"This club has a great record of developing goalkeepers and I cannot wait to work with the coaches here to improve every single day."

The Socceroos have lost the final link to Australia's "golden generation" with captain Mark Milligan announcing his international retirement.

One of just two Australians to make four World Cup squads along with Tim Cahill, the 34-year-old told teammates and staff on Monday he was calling time on his Socceroos career.

Milligan debuted for Australia in a friendly against Liechtenstein in June 2006 and went on to make 80 appearances for his country.

Australia captain Milligan joins Southend

Socceroos skipper Mark Milligan has joined English third-tier outfit Southend United.

The 33-year-old midfielder left Scottish Premiership club side Hibernian in May and has been recruited by the League One club on an initial one-year deal, plus an option for a further year.

"I'm very excited. It's always a process but to be down here now I can't wait to get started," said Milligan, capped 79 times by Australia and who featured at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

U.S. youth Charlie Kelman scores from own half in pro debut in England

United States youth international Charlie Kelman scored from inside his own half on his professional debut in England.

Playing for Southend in the third-tier League One, Kelman lobbed the Plymouth goalkeeper in the second minute of stoppage time. But it wasn't enough to prevent Southend losing 3-2 on Saturday.

Manager Chris Powell says Kelman "was a real livewire for us and obviously he's scored a wonderful goal."
