Clint Dempsey equaled Landon Donovan's all-time U.S. men's national team goals record of 57 with an 82nd-minute strike Saturday in a 2-0 Gold Cup semifinal win over Costa Rica.

The game turned when U.S. coach Bruce Arena brought Dempsey in as a substitute midway through the second half. Dempsey set up Jozy Altidore for the breakthrough goal before adding his own strike from a free kick.

Seattle Sounders sign right-back Kelvin Leerdam from Vitesse

Kelvin Leerdam has joined the Seattle Sounders after four seasons with Vitesse.

The Seattle Sounders completed the signing of Dutch right-back Kelvin Leerdam on Saturday.

Leerdam, 27, has spent his entire career in the Eredivisie, first for Feyenoord before moving to Vitesse in 2013, scoring 17 career goals in all competitions.

The Sounders used targeted allocation money to sign the former Netherlands youth international, meaning he will make between $480,625 and $1 million per season, and categorized him as an "atypical MLS defender" because of his ability to contribute...
