Ex-Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli to join Brazilian club Santos

Could Jorge Sampaoli repair his image with Mexico?
Jorge Sampaoli has been out of work since coaching Argentina at the 2018 World Cup.

Former Argentina and Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli has reached an agreement to join Brazilian club Santos, the club has announced.

Details of the deal have yet to be divulged, though Sampaoli's lawyer said earlier on Thursday that his salary would likely not exceed R$1 million ($260,000) per month.

The 58-year-old Sampaoli has not coached since managing Argentina at the World Cup in Russia this past summer where the Albiceleste fell to eventual champions France in the round of 16.

Santos-Independiente Copa Libertadores match abandoned after fan disturbance

SAO PAULO -- Santos fans threw fireworks at the Independiente bench and tried to invade the field during Tuesday's Copa Libertadores match, forcing the referee to abandon the game with just minutes remaining in a 0-0 draw.

The result means that Independiente, who earlier in the day were awarded a 3-0 first-leg win after Santos were adjudged to have used an ineligible player, qualified for the quarterfinals of South America's premier club competition.

Tuesday's game at the Pacaembu stadium was drifting...

Portland Timbers reacquire Jorge Villafana from Santos Laguna

The Portland Timbers have announced that they reacquired U.S. international defender Jorge Villafana from Liga MX side Santos Laguna.

MLSSoccer.com was the first to report the move.

Portland sent $175,000 of targeted and general allocation money to the LA Galaxy in exchange for the top spot in the allocation order to make the move. Villafana was subject to the allocation order due to the fact that the Timbers received a transfer fee greater than $500,000 when the defender was sent to Santos after...

Pele: Clubs in Europe, Japan and Mexico wanted me after retirement

Pele was carried off the field following his final match as a player.

Brazil legend Pele has revealed he received offers from Europe, Japan and Mexico following his 1977 retirement with the New York Cosmos, but he decided "to retire on top."

Oct. 1 marked the 40th anniversary of Pele's retirement from football. He spent his last three years in activity with the Cosmos of the North American Soccer League after being lured from Santos, the only club he'd played for in his career.

On that date, Pele scored and played for both sides in a friendly between the Cosmos and...

Farewell to The King: When Pele played his last game 40 years ago

Forty years ago, New York and the sporting world bid goodbye "to a king."

To hear Shep Messing -- now the lead analyst for the New York Red Bulls, but then a 27-year-old goalkeeper for the New York Cosmos -- describe Pele's final game, this was not just the grand finale of a star athlete but that of a global icon, a statesman, almost a religious figure.

A friendly between the Cosmos, Pele's last team, and Santos FC, the Brazilian futbol club for which he had become a legend, Pele's final game on...
