NYCFC returns to winning ways as Jordan Morris lifts Sounders to victory

New York City FC defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in an interesting matchup between East and West.

David Villa scored twice as New York City FC won its first game since the season opener, 3-2 over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

Vancouver took the lead after just 37 seconds as Octavio Rivero pounced on a loose ball following a gaffe by NYCFC keeper Josh Saunders.

But Villa found the net twice in a six-minute span, including with a remarkable scissor kick to give the home side the lead in the 41st minute.

Andres Imperiale was fined an undisclosed amount for a serious foul this weekend.

NEW YORK -- Houston midfielder Alex Monteiro de Lima and San Jose Earthquakes defender Andres Imperiale were each suspended for one game and fined undisclosed amounts by MLS on Wednesday for serious foul plays that endangered the safety of opponents.

Monteiro de Lima was penalized for his actions in the 71st minute of the Dynamo's 1-0 loss to Columbus on Saturday. MLS also fined Columbus forward Kei Kamara for instigating mass confrontation.

Chris Wondolowski's penalty kick was the difference as San Jose saw off the visiting Sporting KC.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Chris Wondolowski scored on a penalty kick and David Bingham had five saves to help the San Jose Earthquakes beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0 on Sunday.

Wondolowski scored his MLS-leading seventh goal of the season in the 58th minute after Simon Dawkins drew a likely goal-saving penalty in the box on Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia.

Sporting's Dominic Dwyer appeared to draw a penalty inside San Jose's box just seconds before Wondolowski's goal, but didn't get the call.
