Sao Paulo survive The Strongest, altitude to book Copa Lib last-16 spot

Sao Paulo overcame the altitude and pressure to draw 1-1 vs. The Strongest and stay alive in the Copa Lib.

The group phase of the Copa Libertadores came to a close with some home drama at high altitude, which had always looked possible ever since Brazil's Sao Paulo suffered a shock home defeat against The Strongest of Bolivia in the opening week.

The return match brought the group phase to a close, with the 16th and last place in the knock-out stage was at stake. All Sao Paulo had to do was avoid defeat but at the extreme altitude of La Paz, 3,600 metres above sea level, lasting the 90 minutes is never...

Former champs in trouble as Copa Libertadores group stage winds down

Sao Paulo have had to bounce back from an opening-round loss against The Strongest.

Some former champions have already bitten the dust in the 2016 version of the Copa Libertadores.

The first winners and five-times champions Penarol of Uruguay have not even managed to win a game this year, and victory this week in their final fixture at home to Peru's Sporting Cristal would be nothing more than a consolation. Three-times champions Olimpia of Paraguay have fallen short. Chile's only winners, Colo Colo, and LDU, the lone Ecuadorian team to lift the trophy, have also failed to make...

Copa Libertadores tense as Sao Paulo, River Plate fight to avoid elimination

Sao Paulo are one of the biggest teams in the Copa Lib but their path to the knockout round is far from secure.

There are still 11 places up for grabs in the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores, South America's Champions League. With two weeks of group games to go, five teams have already booked their passage.

Atletico Nacional of Colombia have sailed through, winning all four of their games so far, while the two Liga MX sides, Toluca and Pumas, have also made short work of earning their place in the last 16. Nacional of Uruguay, tight in defence and with a sharp counter-attack, have ground their way...

Shooting death prompts away fans to be banned from derbies in Sao Paulo

Palmeiras fans
Palmeiras fans -- and all other away supporters -- will not be able to attend city derbies for the rest of the year.

Sao Paulo police have banned away fans from attending city derbies until the end of the year after a bystander was shot dead on Sunday as Palmeiras and Corinthians fans battled ahead of their state championship game.

The decision was taken by the state's military police in conjunction with the Paulista State Football Federation and public prosecutors.

"This will avoid the need for the military police to escort organised fan groups, which will allow a reinforcement of policing around the stadiums,"...

Sao Paulo, Racing favourites to progress to Libertadores group phase

Bruno & Alejandro Hohberg
Bruno, left, vies for the ball against Alejandro Hohberg in Sao Paulo's first leg clash with Cesar Vallejo.

The field of 38 clubs in this year's Copa Libertadores, South America's equivalent of the Champions League, contains a grand total of 15 former winners. Two of them, though, have to sweat through the qualifying round, which kicked off last week and concludes this, before they can take their place in the group stage

One of them, Sao Paulo of Brazil, will feel that they have a foot and a half in the next phase. In last Wednesday's first leg, they drew 1-1 away to Cesar Vallejo of Peru.

The result,...
