Sao Paulo, Boca Juniors benefit from drama-filled Copa Lib quarterfinals

Boca Juniors advanced in dramatic fashion, needing extra time to edge Nacional of Uruguay.

These days, the Copa Libertadores may not always be overflowing with quality. But there is no shortage of drama, as the fight for semifinal places proved.

Two great names in the history of the competition, Boca Juniors of Argentina and Nacional of Uruguay, met in the quarterfinal. Going into their meeting, Boca were the only unbeaten team in the field and Nacional had won just two games in their campaign, and that's how it stayed after two 1-1 draws.

Nacional are away-goals specialists, managing...

Maicon
Maicon's 15th minute strike was enough to secure Sao Paulo's progress into the semifinals.

Sao Paulo scored an all-important away goal against Atletico Mineiro to book their place in the Copa Libertadores semifinals on Wednesday.

Edgardo Bauza's side walked away with a 2-2 aggregate win, despite losing 2-1 to Atletico Mineiro in the second leg of the quarterfinal.

Atletico Mineiro stormed to a 2-0 lead in the opening 12 minutes in Belo Horizonte thanks to goals Juan Cazares and Carlos Carvalho.

Sao Paulo's Maicon, however, responded for the visitors three minutes later, tucking away an...

Sao Paulo forward Michel Bastos
Michel Bastos scored the only goal of the match to give Sao Paulo a 1-0 win over Atletico MG.

Former Lyon and Roma winger Michel Bastos scored a 79th minute header to help Sao Paulo draw first blood in a 1-0 win over Atletico Mineiro in their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal first leg game.

In what was an ill-tempered game which saw referee Wilmar Roldan dish out 10 yellow cards, with seven coming in the first half alone, neither team managed to gain any rhythm throughout the 90 minutes.

It was left to former Brazilian international Bastos to settle proceedings when he glanced home a header...

The Argentine club lost to Independiente by a final aggregate score of 2-1, after failing to overcome a two-goal deficit from the first leg in Ecuador.

River dominated possession and shots on goal, but could only find the net once, when substitute Lucas Alario scored from close range to give the hosts a late 1-0 lead in the 79th minute.

Toluca and manager Jose Cardozo in major trouble after Sao Paulo loss

Sao Paulo celeb vs Toluca 160429
Sao Paulo left Toluca with little to celebrate and plenty of work to do after the first leg.

After allowing five goals during the group stage of the Copa Libertadores, Toluca fell apart in the first leg of the round of 16 with a 4-0 away loss to Sao Paulo. The Brazilian side was dominant during Thursday night and was unlucky to not have a couple more goals sneak past Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

Los Diablos Rojos now have an intimidating task at hand and will likely need one of their best-ever performances next week during the second leg in Toluca.
