Peter Whittingham scores from the penalty spot.

Alex Pearce's nightmare first half helped Cardiff make it five straight home wins as they saw off 10-man Reading 2-1.

The Republic of Ireland international's 45 minutes to forget began with the game's opening goal when the Reading defender diverted Peter Whittingham's inswinging corner past his own goalkeeper.

And seconds before the break the centre-back saw red when he fouled former Royal Adam Le Fondre inside the box, allowing Whittingham to fire home the second from the penalty spot.

A resilient defensive display helped Charlton end their run of three Championship matches without a win when they defeated Reading 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

A scrappy game was settled towards the end of the first half, when Charlton's leading goalscorer Igor Vetokele headed in from close range.

Both sides had experienced mixed fortunes of late, with Reading having won only two from nine league matches. The victories, though, were both 3-0 in their previous home outings against Blackpool and Rotherham.

Reading ended their desperate run of poor form in the Championship with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Rotherham at the Madejski Stadium.

Jamie Mackie gave Reading the lead midway through the first half with a precise finish and a second-half brace from top scorer Simon Cox finished off Rotherham, who offered very little all match.

Reading manager Nigel Adkins made five changes from the side that lost 3-0 at Blackburn on Saturday, desperate to inject life into a side who had won only once in eight...

A brace from Rudy Gestede helped Blackburn defeat a spirited Reading side 3-1 to record a third successive win in the Sky Bet Championship.

Gestede's towering header put the hosts ahead early in the first half before Glenn Murray tapped in a deserved equaliser just before the break.

A superb Ben Marshall free-kick saw Blackburn regain the lead and Gestede rammed home a third as they made it five games without defeat and climbed into the top six for the first time under Gary Bowyer.

Reading ended their six-match run without a Championship victory by beating bottom club Blackpool 3-0.

But it was an unconvincing win achieved with a first-half goal from Glenn Murray, a second-half Peter Clarke own goal and a late Nick Blackman effort.

Reading's promising start to the season had long since evaporated on the back of their winless sequence. They had conceded three goals in four of their previous five games.

Blackpool's form was even worse, with just one win in 13 league outings prior...
