How 'fake news' put the transfer of a Ukrainian football player in limbo

Roman Zozulya Real Betis
Formerly of Real Betis, Roman Zozulya is suddenly without a club following unproven links to a neo-Nazi group in Ukraine.

MADRID -- This is a story about a Nazi symbol that isn't a Nazi symbol. A transfer that isn't really a transfer. A soccer player that, for the moment, isn't actually a soccer player.

It starts in Ukraine, with fear and blood and war. It comes to Spain, with anger and frustration and resentment. It involves politics. It might involve Russia. It involves a clandestine car ride through a back alley and a bizarrely un-clandestine meeting in a shopping mall food court.

It is...

Real Betis agree to end Roman Zozulya's Rayo Vallecano loan

Roman Zozulya Real Betis
Roman Zozulya initially signed a three-year contract with Betis after arriving from Dnipro last summer.

La Liga outfit Real Betis announced on Thursday they have reached an agreement with Rayo Vallecano to terminate Roman Zozulya's loan spell.

The struggling Segunda Division side had earlier this month postponed a decision regarding the Ukraine international, who returned to Betis to train because of Rayo fans' protests against his signing.

The Rayo supporters falsely accused the 27-year-old of having links to radical groups back home, which the player denied. He returned to Seville with Rayo's permission.

Rayo Vallecano delay decision over Roman Zozulya future

Roman Zozulya Real Betis
The future of Roman Zozulya with Rayo Vallecano is still up in the air.

Rayo Vallecano have postponed making a decision regarding Roman Zozulya's future at the club until a later date.

The struggling Segunda Division side summoned the Ukraine international to Madrid on Wednesday with the striker having trained with parent club Real Betis for the last month with his loan transfer to Rayo in doubt because of fans protesting against his signing.

The Rayo supporters falsely accused the 27-year-old of having links to radical groups back home, which the player vehemently...

Roman Zozulya given transfer ultimatum by Rayo Vallecano - agent

The agent of Ukraine international Roman Zozulya says that Rayo Vallecano have told the player to join the club on Wednesday and warned him that failure to do so will leave him in breach of contract.

Zozulya has been training with parent club Real Betis since his loan transfer to Segunda Division strugglers Rayo was thrown into doubt by fans protesting against his signing.

The Rayo supporters falsely accused the 27-year-old striker of having links to radical groups back home. Zozulya vehemently...
