Oldham begin life without Lee Johnson at SportsDirect.com Park on Saturday, with fellow play-off chasing outfit Preston the visitors.

Johnson and assistant Tommy Wright this week departed for Barnsley, leaving first-team coach Dean Holden and club captain Adam Lockwood in charge of first-team affairs.

They will be without both Joseph Mills and one of his defensive colleagues, George Elokobi, with respective hamstring strains picked up in last weekend's defeat to Leyton Orient.

Daniel Johnson scored the only goal of the game to keep Preston's play-off push firmly on track against Walsall.

The former Aston Villa man secured all three points in the 18th minute when he converted Chris Humphrey's cut-back from close range.

The home side could have been in front inside two minutes but Joe Garner could only head straight at goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell.

Minutes later, Walsall again had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping the scores level when he produced a stunning reaction stop...

Daniel Johnson scored his first goal for Preston in their 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe.

After a goalless first half, the on-loan Aston Villa midfielder opened his Lilywhites account just before the hour mark.

Paul Gallagher then added a second 18 minutes from time to cement North End's position in the League One play-off places.

Scunthorpe almost took the lead after just 10 minutes but Liam O'Neil lofted a 30-yard effort inches wide of an open goal after Preston keeper Sam Johnstone's poor kick.

Wayne Rooney said sorry to goalkeeper after Preston penalty

ESPN FC's Janusz Michallik analyses Wayne Rooney's reported apology to Preston goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann for the way in which he won a penalty against him.
Preston North End manager Simon Grayson defending Wayne Rooney after the England captain appeared to go down in the penalty area in their FA Cup Fifth Round clash.

Preston goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann has told The Sun that Wayne Rooney apologised for the way he won a penalty against him in Monday's fifth round FA Cup tie.

Manchester United and England skipper Rooney went down in the box to win the spot kick after Stuckmann rushed off his line to challenge him towards the end of the game.

The incident, which led to Rooney scoring from the spot to wrap up a 3-1 win for the Red Devils at Deepdale, was met by controversy as the 29-year-old was defended following...

Manchester Utd goal lands Preston's Scott Laird £1 from his grandmother

Scott Laird celebrates his effort against Manchester United.

Goal bonuses being what they are for professional footballers, we imagined that Preston left-back Scott Laird cleaned up when he found the net against Manchester United.

The League One star scored the opening goal in his side's 3-1 defeat on Monday night but landed only a single pound for his efforts, although it did come from his grandmother.

"Every time we scored as kids, she used to give me and my brothers a pound," the 26-year-old told BBC Somerset. "Even though I'm 26 now, I still carry that...
