NPFL Final Day: What to expect

Akwa United close the gap on league leaders

Michael Ibe's 76th-minute strike for 10-man Akwa United sealed a 1-0 away victory against Yobe Desert Stars on a weekend in which league leaders Lobi Stars were defeated.

Akwa, who had to deal with Ayobami Asekunowo's first-half dismissal, are just two points behind Stars, who became the latest heavyweight casualty to stumble in Omoku as they lost 1-0 to Go Round at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium. Shedrack Oghali headed in Akinwale Ogunjobi's 69th-minute cross for the winner.

Go Round, who remain unbeaten...

Lobi Stars pull further clear at the top

Lobi Stars moved five points clear at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table on Sunday thanks to a 1-0 home win against Sunshine Stars.

The game in Makurdi was decided by Kehinde Abayomi's 73rd-minute own goal, a result which piles further pressure on Sunshine, who are struggling in the relegation zone.

Nyima Nwagua salvaged an away point for Kano Pillars at Heartland in a 1-1 draw in Owerri on Sunday. The bottom club stunned their more illustrious opponents in the 28th minute...

With Enyimba drawing, and Akwa United and MFM FC both being defeated, Plateau United's 2-1 victory over USM Alger was the only positive result for the NPFL's four representatives.

However, reports that began to emerge in the immediate aftermath of...

NPFL wrap: Top four remain unchanged

The title-favourites in the Nigeria Professional Football League failed to show the stuff of champions on match-day 14, on an exciting weekend which saw the top four remain unchanged with 29 goals scored.

Lobi Stars completed an impressive comeback to earn a 3-2 home win against Rivers United, a result which ensured they opened a three-point lead at the top. The leaders had trailed at the half-time interval despite going ahead through Ezekiel Mbah's 18th-minute penalty.

The visitors turned the...

Boboye backs Plateau United to overcome Etoile du Sahel deficit

Plateau United head coach Kennedy Boboye is optimistic that the reigning NPFL champions can reach the CAF Champions League group stage despite being defeated 4-2 in their First Round first leg match against Etoile du Sahel on Tuesday.

The debutants were comfortably outclassed during the first half in Sousse, and were three goals down inside the opening eight minutes, but battled back during the second half.

Two late goals change the complexion of the clash, and while United remain the outsiders,...
