Former Perth Glory star Jamie Harnwell guided the club to a surprise W-League Premiers Plate win last season.

Perth Glory legend Jamie Harnwell has described being asked to re-apply for his job as W-League coach as "a kick in the guts", prompting the former player to cut his ties with the Western Australian club.

Glory last week took over control of the their women's side, who had been previously run by Football West, the state's governing body. Harnwell was coach for four years and took the side to last season's W-League Grand Final after winning the Premiers' Plate.

Former Australia striker Alistair Edwards has scaled the heights of Asian and international football, winning a major Cup final, representing his country at senior level in Argentina and coaching in the A-League.

Now he's at a little-known Malaysian third division club, expected to work wonders -- and yet he wouldn't want it any other way.

How former Spurs star Gary Stevens went from hero to zero in Thailand

Former England defender Gary Stevens was 'rested' by TPL side Army United. Photo credit: Paul Murphy

The increasingly fleeting nature of professional football is often in contrast to the longer term loyalty of fans. That was underlined last weekend when an admirer of ex-England defender-turned-coach Gary Stevens flew 9500 kilometres to see his hero on the touchlines for Thai Premier League club Army United FC.

Little did the traveller know that former Tottenham Hotspur star Stevens had been "rested" by the club just 24 hours before Army's Saturday trip to BEC Tero Sasana.

"Rested" is the new buzzword...

Perth Glory end with win over Western Sydney, Melbourne City thrashed

Andy Keogh celebrates after scoring the winning goal for Perth Glory.

Perth Glory held on for a 2-1 victory away to Western Sydney Wanderers despite Denis Kramar's red card as their campaign came to a close.

The result saw Glory draw level on points with league leaders Melbourne Victory at the top of the table, but they will not be able to take part in this season's A-League finals as a result of a Football Federation Australia punishment for breaching the salary cap.

The visitors had taken the lead through Jamie MacLaren's low shot on 17 minutes, but they were pegged...
