Yeferson Quintana, left, has joined the San Jose Earthquakes from Uruguay's Penarol.

The 21-year-old center-back made 29 appearances across all competitions for the Carboneros last season, scoring three goals.

"Yeferson fits the profile of the player we wanted to add at this position," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli.

"His arrival will also give us different options as to how our defense will line up next season. Yeferson has a strong presence in both phases...

Alejandro Moreno responds to Jose Mourinho's belief that Man United will be able to compete with Europe's best in two years.

Manchester United have confirmed that defender Guillermo Varela has re-joined former club Penarol.

Varela, 24, joined United from Penarol in 2013 on a five-year contract during David Moyes' reign but has now been allowed to return to the Uruguayan club.

A statement on United's Twitter account read: ".@Guille_Varela4 has left #MUFC to rejoin Penarol. All the best for the future, Guillermo!"

Varela had limited impact at Old Trafford. After a loan spell at Real Madrid Castilla in 2014-15, he made...

Palmeiras call for CONMEBOL action after Copa Libertadores brawl

Palmeiras players face off with Penarol players after their Copa Libertadores match.

Palmeiras are hoping that CONMEBOL act swiftly and punish Uruguayan outfit Penarol following a brawl that marred their 3-2 come-from-behind triumph in Montevideo in the Copa Libertadores.

Brazil side Palmeiras trailed 2-0 at half-time but hit back for a 3-2 triumph on Wednesday that put them top of Group 5 with 10 points, while the hosts remained at the foot of the standings with just three points.

Instead of celebrating a victory after the final whistle, the Palmeiras players became engaged in...

Brazil clubs leading Copa Libertadores quest while Argentines try to keep up

Wilstermann players celebrate goal against Penarol
Wilstermann players celebrate after scoring a goal in the 6-2 win over Penarol.

After two weeks of the group phase of the Copa Libertadores, the competition now takes a three-week break. Here are some facts from the opening fortnight's action.

1. It's a dynamic process

The very first game in the history of the Libertadores, on April 19, 1960, was between Penarol and Jorge Wilstermann, champions respectively of Uruguay and Bolivia. Penarol won 7-1 -- an entirely logical result. Back then, Uruguayan football was still a gigantic force at both club and national team level, and...
