Northampton's troubles deepened as they slumped to a crushing 5-1 defeat at Oldham.

The Cobblers remain in the League One drop zone and are winless in six matches in all competitions after being outclassed by a rampant home side.

Oldham needed just four minutes to go in front as midfielder Jack Byrne took possession 25 yards from goal and hit a superb curling effort into the top corner.

Northampton's Matt Crooks fired just wide, but the Latics doubled their lead after 26 minutes when Byrne delivered...

The Shrimpers opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Jason Demetriou fired home from the penalty spot after Cameron Dummigan had fouled Josh Wright.

The spot-kick ended a poor run of penalties for Southend, who had missed four of their last five.

And it was Oldham who instead struggled to score from 12 yards as Craig Davies' well-struck penalty - given for a foul by Demetriou on Rob Hunt...

Gillingham dropped into the relegation zone after being held to a goalless draw by Oldham in a battle of two in-form teams at Priestfield.

Luke O'Neill's injury-time free-kick smashed against the underside of the crossbar for the hosts, while - at the other end - only a superb Mark Byrne clearance on the goalline prevented visiting substitute Queensy Menig from scoring.

A scrappy first half saw one serious save from Gills goalkeeper Tomas Holy, throwing out a firm left hand to deny Eoin Doyle's swerving...

Eoin Doyle scored a superb late double as Oldham claimed the local derby honours with a 3-1 win against Rochdale.

The Lancashire clubs are separated by less than six miles and the home side led after just two minutes when Gevaro Nepomuceno swung in a deep cross and right-back Cameron Dummigan arrived to head in from close range.

It was all square after 16 minutes as goalscorer Dummigan turned villain with a poor defensive header which allowed Matt Done to stride clear and finish from 12 yards.

Two goals from Richie Bennett and one from Hallam Hope helped Carlisle claim an FA Cup scalp, as the hosts beat Oldham 3-2 to reach the second round.

Latics supporter and former schoolboy player Bennett netted the opener after 22 minutes, getting on the end of a far-post header from former Oldham defender Clint Hill to nod home from close range.

That strike came after the visitors had enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with Dan Gardner striking a 20-yard shot against the crossbar.
