A-League finals: Can anyone beat Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets?

Melbourne Victory managed to end their Asian Champions League campaign on a high with a win over Shanghai.
Sydney FC failed to advance to the last 16 of Asian Champions League after disappointing 0-0 draw against Shanghai Shenhua.

This A-League season has been a two-horse race, but with Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets showing glimpses of vulnerability over the past month, could one of the remaining four teams steal championship glory?

That will certainly be the goal for Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory, Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar when the finals series kicks off this weekend.

Both matches in week one of the finals will be held at AAMI Park in Melbourne, with City hosting Brisbane on Friday before the Victory welcome...

Ben Kantarovski injury won't sour Jets' record-win - Ernie Merrick

Newcastle Jets coach Ernie Merrick promises his squad will "manage" despite a further injury blow as they head into the A-League finals series with fresh confidence from a record-setting performance.

The Jets overcame a three-game losing streak and two games without scoring by thumping Central Coast 8-2 on Saturday night at Gosford.

The 10-goal affair set a record for most goals scored in an A-League game and was the biggest home loss for any club.

A week earlier, Newcastle, already assured of second...

Newcastle have rediscovered their attacking flair for the A-League finals, while consigning Central Coast to the wooden spoon with an 8-2 flogging.

Riley McGree scored a hat trick on Saturday night at Central Coast Stadium and Roy O'Donovan netted a double. The second-placed Jets dominated, coming into the final-round match off three-consecutive losses and two goalless efforts.

Newcastle led 3-0 inside 24 minutes through goals to Joey Champness (10th minute), O'Donovan (20th) and McGree (24th).

Perth breathed life into their A-League finals hopes with a 2-0 win over a disjointed Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Eighth before round 26, the Glory move level on 32 points with sixth-placed Brisbane, who play Western Sydney (30 points) on Saturday at ANZ Stadium.

First-half goals from Diego Castro and Adam Taggart put Perth in control on Friday night over a flat Newcastle side. The Jets are assured of second place but are out of form with three-consecutive losses.

Newcastle Jets' form slump of no concern to Ernie Merrick

Newcastle are putting on a happy face in response to their ill-timed slump in A-League form.

The Jets have known they'll finish second irrespective of results for a week now, which may have played a part in their most recent defeat.

On Sunday, Ernie Merrick's side were humbled 3-0 at home by Melbourne City -- a team still very much alive in the race for third.

Throw in the previous result, a 5-2 away loss to Adelaide, and it starts to get concerning. But not for coach Merrick.

"The doom and gloom...
