David Villa was shown a red card after the on-field referee referred the incident to the Video Assistant Referee.

David Villa was sent off during New York City FC's 3-1 Desert Diamond Cup loss to Houston Dynamo on Saturday night thanks to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The system has been introduced in the MLS preseason as a way to help advise the on-field referee on "game-changing" decisions including goals, penalty shouts, direct red card incidents and mistaken identity.

John Stertzer, right, has signed with New York City FC.

New York City FC added former Real Salt Lake midfielder John Stertzer to its squad on Thursday.

Stertzer, 26, had been on trial with the team in preseason and did enough to impress NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira.

"What I like about John is his attitude and his work ethic - he's a really smart player who is a goalscorer," Vieira said in a statement. "The timing of his runs inside the box is really good -- he's always at the right place at the right time and his finishing is excellent.

New York City FC has signed winger Maximiliano Moralez from Leon as its third Designated Player, the club announced on Wednesday.

The once-capped Argentina international signed a three-year contract with the club.

"I know that the league is growing a lot and we have a lot of great players -- I'm looking forward to playing with players like David Villa and Andrea Pirlo who are two world-class champions who have achieved a lot in their careers," Moralez said of joining his new club.

Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera has joined New York City FC in Major League Soccer on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old Venezuelan, only moved to the Premier League club on British transfer deadline day on Jan. 31. He was expected to be then sent on loan to one of team's sister clubs in the City Football Group.
