One moment set Adelaide's Marco Kurz and Victory's Kevin Muscat on very different paths

Shayon Harrison scored his first goal in the A-League to help Melbourne City to a 2-0 win at the Leichhardt Oval.
Wellington Phoenix put on a show in the first half of their game against Western Sydney Wanderers.
VAR denied Newcastle Jets a point after Ben Kennedy saved a penalty to seal all three points for the Central Coast Mariners.

Games of football are defined by a fluid narrative. One thing happens, followed by another, and then another. The referee's whistle is seemingly the only protection against the possibility of infinitely alternate realities.

So much in football rests on the timing of a movement or decision, or the mere bounce of the ball, creating perpetual causality.

With the confirmation Adelaide United will not extend Marco Kurz's contract at the end of this A-League season, and the dominant thought of football...

Kevin Muscat drops Lawrence Thomas, warns other Victory players to fight for their spots

VAR denied Newcastle Jets a point after Ben Kennedy saved a penalty to seal all three points for the Central Coast Mariners.

Kevin Muscat has responded to Melbourne Victory's month of inertia by challenging his players to fight for their places; beginning with first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas.

Thomas was axed from the starting line-up for the first time in three seasons on Saturday night as the Victory did enough to beat Brisbane 2-1 at Marvel Stadium.

It was a selection shake-up that few saw coming.

Thomas, 26, has been the No. 1 at the Victory since 2016 and has won two Grand Finals for Muscat's side, winning...

Kosta Barbarouses destroyed Brisbane for the third time this A-League season as Melbourne Victory edged the Roar 2-1.

The New Zealander scored a pair of first-half goals to earn Victory's first win in six weeks at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. The goals, his sixth and seventh against his former club this season, ties Shane Smeltz's single-season benchmark against one club set for Perth Glory against Victory in 2011-12. The red-hot striker refused to celebrate either goal, understood as a tribute...

Sanfrecce Hiroshima ruined Keisuke Honda's Japanese homecoming, finding a late goal to dent Melbourne Victory's AFC Champions League ambitions.

The J-League club won 2-1 on Tuesday night, scoring either side of Honda's equaliser to secure a result against the run of play.

Teenage talent Shunki Higashi netted after just three minutes and Daiki Watari put a header past Lawrence Thomas with four minutes remaining, just as Victory thought they'd nabbed a share of the spoils.

Honda at least provided a...

Melbourne Victory's Asian Champions League campaign suffered a major setback as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Daegu FC in their opening game.

Ola Toivonen made a scoring return, but goals for Cesinha, Hwang Soon-Min and Edgar left Victory with much to do if they are to reach the next round.

Victory had no answer to the sublime skills of Daegu's Brazilian forwards Cesinha and Edgar, with the result ending their 12-match unbeaten home run in the competition.

Kevin Muscat's side, in a midseason slump,...
