Newcastle sign Japan's Yoshinori Muto, as Rafa Benitez expresses concerns

Newcastle signed Japan forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz on a four-year contract on Thursday, hours after manager Rafa Benitez hinted at concerns over a lack of transfer spending following a 4-0 friendly defeat.

Newcastle said last week that they had reached an agreement with the Bundesliga club for the transfer. Muto's move was completed on Thursday after he was granted a work permit.

Muto, 26, has played 25 times for Japan and featured in one game at the recent World Cup, the 1-0 loss to Poland....

Mainz reject big-money Premier League bid for Jean-Philippe Gbamin

Mainz have rejected a big-money bid for Ivory Coast international Jean-Philippe Gbamin from an unnamed Premier League suitor, according to the club's sporting director.

"The good thing is we already received an extraordinary offer, but we turned it down," Schroeder began. "Jean-Philippe will stay."

Newcastle set to sign Japan forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz

LONDON -- Japan forward Yoshinori Muto is set to join Newcastle United from Mainz after the clubs struck a deal and the player agreed terms and had a medical, the Premier League team said on Friday.

Muto, who was part of Japan's World Cup squad in Russia, where he featured in the defeat by Poland, has been on Tyneside ahead the proposed move, which is subject to a work permit.

The English FA is due to hear the case next week to decide if Muto, who has not recently been a regular starter for Japan,...

Borussia Dortmund sign Abdou Diallo, France under-21 defender, from Mainz

Raphael Honigstein explains why Borussia Dortmund's Sokratis Papastathopoulos would be an underwhelming addition for Arsenal.

Borussia Dortmund have completed the transfer of France under-21 defender Abdou Diallo.

The 22-year-old joins Dortmund on a five-year deal from Mainz, and the club will reportedly pay €28 million for the centre-back -- the second highest transfer fee in their history.

Having joined Mainz for €5m from Monaco last summer, Diallo has more than quintupled his transfer value after only 27 Bundesliga matches.

He will replace defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who is set to join Arsenal in...

Brighton sign Nigeria international Leon Balogun

Nigeria international Leon Balogun has completed a move to Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion from Mainz, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old, who has been named in Gernot Rohr's World Cup squad, has joined the Seagulls on a two-year deal and moves to the Amex Stadium on a free transfer after coming to the end of his contract with the Bundesliga outfit.

"I am delighted to welcome Leon to the club," Brighton coach Chris Hughton told the club's official website. "He will add more...
