Israeli police arrest 10 people after Tel Aviv derby pitch invasion

The Tel Aviv derby was halted on Monday after a fan ran onto the pitch and assaulted Maccabi's Eran Zehavi.

Ten people have been arrested by Israeli police after a pitch invasion during Monday night's derby between Hapoel and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The trouble began when a Hapoel fan ran onto the pitch and attempted to punch Maccabi midfielder Eran Zahavi, who fought back and was sent off by the referee.

Soon afterwards, more fans invaded the playing area and were intercepted by security guards before the game was called off after 33 minutes.

The Tel Aviv derby was halted on Monday after a fan ran onto the pitch and assaulted Maccabi's Eran Zehavi.

The derby between Hapoel and Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the Israeli Premier League was abandoned on Monday as Maccabi midfielder Eran Zahavi was sent off for kicking a fan who had entered the pitch to attack him.

With the match level at 1-1 just 22 minutes into in the first half, a Hapoel fan leaped over the barriers and ran onto the pitch to confront Zahavi -- a former Hapoel star who had scored against his old club already.

After the pair squared up, both player and fan clashed before security...

Maccabi Tel Aviv says its coach has quit because of the 'current security situation' in Israel.

TEL AVIV, Israel -- Maccabi Tel Aviv says its coach has quit because of the "current security situation" in Israel.

The club said Oscar Garcia, who is a former Barcelona midfielder from Spain, will be replaced by Pako Ayestaran, another Spaniard. Ayestaran was previously an assistant coach at Liverpool and Valencia under Rafa Benitez.
