He has played 30 times for Italy and scored seven goals, but the former Manchester United player has not featured since playing against the Republic of Ireland precisely two years ago.

Rayo Vallecano were relegated from the Primera Division after five years in the top flight despite beating Levante 3-1 on the final day of the season.

Sporting Gijon's 2-0 win over Villarreal condemned Paco Jemez's side to a return to the Segunda Division.

An impressive strike from Pablo Hernandez put Rayo ahead in the 11th minute and Jozabed deflected in an effort from captain Roberto Trashorras to make it 2-0 in the 23rd.

Verza reduced the deficit for Levante from the penalty spot but Rayo substitute...

Giuseppe Rossi scored a last-minute winner as relegated Levante came from behind to end Atletico Madrid's Primera Division title hopes with a 2-1 win.

Fernando Torres gave Atletico the lead early on, but Victor's 30th-minute header levelled before Italian forward Rossi fired home from the edge of the box at the death.

Barcelona's 5-0 victory against Espanyol leaves Atletico three points behind the defending champions with one game to play and unable to overtake them because of the head-to-head results...

Juanfran began his career at Levante and returned for his second spell six years ago.

Levante captain Juanfran has announced his retirement following his side's relegation from the Primera Division.

Les Granotes' six-year stay in Spain's top flight came to an end after Monday's 3-1 defeat to Malaga.

Levante have two games remaining this season, against Atletico Madrid and Real Vallecano, with Juanfran expected to feature.

The 39-year-old, who began his career at the club before returning to Estadio Ciudad de Valencia in 2010, said: "These are not easy situations when one is not...

Late goals from Duje Cop and Gonzalo Castro broke Levante's hearts and confirmed their relegation from the Primera Division as Malaga won 3-1 at La Rosaleda.

Levante, bottom of the table and six points from safety, knew defeat would see them return to the Segunda and things looked grim when Cop put the hosts ahead. However, Jose Luis Morales' quick reply gave them hope.

Rubi's side controversially had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the second half which would have seen them take the lead...
