Marseille beat Lyon in Coupe de France as Dimitri Payet debuts

Dimitri Payet made his Marseille debut to loud applause on Tuesday.

New signing Dimitri Payet came off the bench in extra-time as Marseille edged through 2-1 against Lyon in their Coupe de France tie at the Stade Velodrome.

The 29-year-old playmaker completed a £25 million move back to his old club on Sunday after becoming unhappy at West Ham, and he heard his name chanted by the home support before kickoff.

Marseille took the lead after 25 minutes when Rod Fanni headed in a free kick from Maxime Lopez, but they saw defender Patrice Evra, another January signing,...

French league leaders Nice have only the title race to focus on for the rest of the season after going out of the Coupe de France on Sunday, losing 2-1 away to Lorient.

Lorient, in last place in Ligue 1, saw off Nice despite the visitors taking the lead through top scorer Alassane Plea near the end of the first half.

The hosts equalised with a fine individual goal from former Arsenal forward Jeremie Aliadiere in the 71st minute, and Algerian midfielder Walid Mesloub's winner shortly after sent...

LENS, France -- Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain marked his injury comeback with a delightful goal as a youthful Arsenal side drew 1-1 with French second-division club RC Lens in their first preseason game on Friday.

The Gunners trailed through Mathias Autret's first-half goal and had lacked sharpness up front until Oxlade-Chamberlain raced onto a pass from Serge Gnabry and calmly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez in the 82nd minute. It was the lone piece of individual quality on the night...

Atletico Madrid complete deal to buy stake in Lens

The Stade Felix Bollaert-Delelis was renovated for use in Euro 2016.

La Liga club Atletico Madrid have formalised the purchase of 34.6 percent of the shares of Ligue 2 club Lens.

It was announced in May that Atletico were to take a large share in the French club, which has been beset with financial issues in recent years, with a Luxembourg based company called Solferino headed by the Champions League finalists' long-time advisor Ignacio Aguillo having the remaining 65 percent in a deal overseen by the French bankruptcy courts.

Lens were relegated in 2011, and although...
