 By Tom Marshall

Landon Donovan continues to struggle for playing time at Club Leon

The FC crew discuss Carlos Vela's performances early on at LAFC and whether he can make the case for a spot on Mexico's World Cup squad.
The guys examine the first weekend of the MLS season, preview the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals and discuss Mexico's plan to freeze promotion/relegation.

Five talking points from Round 11 of games in the Liga MX 2018 Clausura:

1. Donovan struggling for meaningful minutes at Leon

Ahead of Club Leon's 2-0 loss to Club America on Saturday, Landon Donovan said that the match inside Estadio Azteca was one that grabbed his attention before he signed on to play in Liga MX. Given the 36-year-old's history with the U.S. national team and the stadium's significance for El Tri, that was natural.

Former U.S. international Landon Donovan will return to Estadio Azteca Saturday when Leon takes on Club America in a clash the 36-year-old marked down as one of the standouts when he signed for La Fiera.

"It's a historic stadium all over the whole world," Donovan told reporters on his arrival in Mexico City on Friday. "That's why whenever I played [with the national team] it was joyful and then usually sad, but I'm happy for the opportunity to play here again.

Landon Donovan gets 36th birthday surprise at Club Leon training

Donovan's 36th birthday passed with typical flair delivered by his Club Leon teammates.

Landon Donovan is fluent in Spanish and seems to have taken to life in Liga MX with Leon in his stride. But his birthday celebration at training on Monday morning may well have surprised him.

The U.S. legend turned 36 on Sunday and the Leon squad launched into a rendition of "Las Mananitas" when the team gathered for the start of a busy week. Normally in Mexico, the person celebrating his or her birthday then has to blow out the candles and take a "mordida," or first bite of the cake. It's at...

Landon Donovan says Liga MX still 'technically' superior to MLS

Landon Donovan says he thinks Major League Soccer isn't a long way behind Liga MX in terms of quality, while also declaring himself fit for a more prominent role for Club Leon.

The 35-year-old played 30 minutes on Tuesday for Leon in its 4-1 Copa MX win over Cafetaleros de Tapachula in the forward's second game since his surprise second return from retirement last month.

And Donovan said he has been surprised by the play in Liga MX, but believes MLS is inching closer.

"Watching Mexican football...

Landon Donovan steps up match-fitness in Copa MX win

United States legend Landon Donovan continued his comeback on Tuesday with a substitute appearance for Club Leon in its 4-1 Copa MX victory over Cafetaleros de Tapachula.

It was Donovan's second appearance for Leon since the shock announcement in January that he would be coming out of retirement for the second time.

The 35-year-old came on in the 60th minute with the score at 2-0 and almost scored seconds later, when he hit a dipping first-time shot just wide of the post from 25 yards.

Donovan played...
