A year ago: Johor Darul Ta'zim stun defending champs for first AFC Champions League win

Having won the past six editions of the Super League, Johor Darul Ta'zim are the undisputed kings of Malaysian football.

But a year ago, the Southern Tigers were facing potential elimination from the AFC Champions League. After four consecutive failed attempts to qualify for Asia's premier club competition, Johor Darul Ta'zim finally broke through in 2019. The squad, however, were immediately outclassed and managed to pick up just one point after their first four group stage matches.

It was always...

Johor Darul Ta'zim leading the way in Malaysia's first foray into the Asian Champions League

On Thursday afternoon in AFC House in southern Kuala Lumpur, a Malaysian dream was realised as the name of a club from the country was pulled out of a ball and entered the group stage of the AFC Champions League. Next February, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) will be one of the continental big boys -- or at least rub shoulders with them.

The only problem was that as the draw was held about three weeks earlier than usual -- because the AFC has the 2019 Asian Cup starting in early January -- the East Asian...

Perak want to 'do a Leicester' by stunning JDT in 2018 MSL

ESPN FC's Jason Dasey gives an inside look at the 2015 Malaysia Cup final as Selangor were crowned champions for the 33rd time.

Perak have been backed to take inspiration from Leicester City by pulling off a stunning upset to lift the Malaysia Super League (MSL) title in 2018.

Leicester shocked the football world in 2016 as they became Premier League champions, having ended the previous campaign down in 14th spot.

And Perak's First Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir believes the Bos Gaurus can become MSL champions this year, ending Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) four-year reign.

"When Leicester won the English Premier League...

JDT stars Dominic Tan, Syamer Kutty to go to Portugal

Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson discuss Pep Guardiola's promise to visit JDT if Manchester City win the Premier League title.

Two of Malaysia's under-23 squad are set for a year in Portugal as their club Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) look to support their development.

Centre-back Dominic Tan and midfielder Syamer Kutty Abba are ready for a one-year loan deal at Portuguese third-tier side Vilaverdense FC.

20-year-old Tan started all four games in Malaysia's run to the quarterfinals at the AFC U23 Championship in China this month, while Syamer -- also 20 -- came off the bench in three of their matches.

Now, both have the opportunity...

JDT to focus on MSL, not AFC Cup after Muang Thong thrashing

Jason Dasey and Dez Corkhill discuss Tampines Rovers FC's trip to Bali United on January 16th for their AFC Champions League playoff.
Thai stars Teerasil Dangda, Teerathon Bunmathan and Chanathip Songkrasin out on loan to the J-League for the 2018 season.
Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson discuss Pep Guardiola's promise to visit JDT if Manchester City win the Premier League title.

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) skipper Safiq Rahim admits his team's focus will switch to securing direct qualification for the 2019 AFC Champions League (ACL), following the 5-2 thrashing by Muang Thong United in this year's Second Preliminary Round.

An early capitulation from the Malaysia Super League (MSL) champions on Tuesday night saw them 3-0 down by the half-hour mark, effectively ending their ACL dream for another year.

They still have the AFC Cup to aim for as they go into a group featuring Singapore's...
