Copa Libertadores gets new lease of life for 2017, but questions remain

Copa Libertadores
The Copa Libertadores will adopt a new format for the 2017 edition.

Until just a few years ago, the draw for the Copa Libertadores gave only the vaguest idea of what the tournament was going to look like.

The ceremony was held in November, before the South American championships had been decided. It was not yet clear which teams would be participating -- which made it hard to get excited about the prospect of a clash between Paraguay 2 and Ecuador 1.

Now, the draw is being held later. This year it is taking place on Wednesday -- the day the last ball is kicked in...

Granada to terminate Jose Angulo contract due to failed drugs test

Jose Angulo will not play for Granada after failing a drugs test.

Granada are in the process of terminating the contract of summer signing Jose Angulo because of a failed drugs test.

The player had been suspended since Aug. 25, when Granada learned from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) that the Ecuador international striker had tested positive for a banned substance during the Copa Libertadores.

The Spanish club have announced that the player's B sample was also positive.

A statement read: "The CONMEBOL notified to Granada CF that the result...

Atletico Nacional's Copa Libertadores celebrations leave four dead

Atletico Nacional fans celebrate their Copa Libertadores final on Wednesday.

Celebrations in Colombia after Atletico Nacional won the Copa Libertadores final on Wednesday ended in violence, with four fans killed in a night of boisterous revelry.

Authorities say they registered more than 600 street fights after Medellin's Atletico Nacional defeated Ecuador's Independiente del Valle 1-0.

It was Nacional's second-ever title in the premier South American club tournament and the first by a Colombian team since 2004.

One of those killed was wearing the shirt of a rival Medellin...

Atletico Nacional too powerful for Independiente del Valle in Copa final

Atletico Nacional celebrate
Atletico Nacional sealed their second-ever Copa Libertadores title with a 1-0 home win over Independiente del Valle.

So there was no fairy tale ending to the 2016 Copa Libertadores. Little Independiente del Valle of Ecuador fell at the final hurdle, losing 1-0 in the second leg and 2-1 on aggregate to Atletico Nacional of Colombia, who win South America's major club title for the second time in their history.

It was the right result. Nacional were the better team on the night, over the two legs and during the entire competition. The excellence of their record speaks for itself: 10 wins, three draws, just one defeat,...

Nacional Copa Libertadores
Miguel Borja scored in the ninth minute for Atletico Nacional on Wednesday.

Atletico Nacional won their second Copa Libertadores title, defeating upstarts Independiente del Valle 1-0 in the second leg of the final and 2-1 on aggregate.

Miguel Borja's goal in the proved the difference in the ninth minute for the hosts who last won the continental crown in 1989.

Borja, who scored all four goals in the semifinal against Sao Paulo, wasted little time in front of the home fans on Wednesday -- his powerful, low shot beating Librado Azcona after the Independiente goalkeeper parried...
