Expectations high for Liga MX clubs in CONCACAF Champions League

Henry Martin has been a revelation with his five goals and two assists for Club America.

Expectations are unsurprisingly high for the Liga MX teams involved in this year's CONCACAF Champions League tournament. Since 2006, no club outside of Mexico's first division has won top honors in the CONCACAF competition. Whether it be in the "Champions Cup" or "Champions League" era, a Liga MX team always seems to finish with the title in hand.

This year, the responsibility of maintaining that streak from 2006 lies in the hands (and feet) of four Liga MX squads: Club America, Chivas, Tijuana...

Chivas struggles to convert, weakness to crosses cause woeful slump

Chivas are having some bad luck but finishing their chances should see them climb the table again.

A second-half, injury-time goal from Alan Pulido rescued a tie for Chivas against Queretaro in Liga MX on Wednesday, ending the Guadalajara club's run of three consecutive defeats. The point from the 2-2 draw was construed as a positive for the institution and understandably so, given that Queretaro had gone 2-1 up in the 88th minute through a Miguel Martinez header.

"I think the point is positive in many ways," said Chivas coach Matias Almeyda after the game. "I admire the reaction of my players...

Pumas grab top place, America fall to No. 2, Chivas continue sinking

Matias Alustiza and Pumas won again this weekend as their superb season continues.

MEXICO CITY -- In a weekend where a pair of Argentine goalkeepers, Agustin Marchesin and Nahuel Guzman, gave top performances on Saturday's clash between Tigres and America, it was Necaxa's own Argentine goalkeeper, Marcelo Barovero, who was named top goalkeeper for Week 6. With a week ahead full of midweek and weekend games ahead, it will be fascinating to see if Pumas continue what has been an impressive start to the Clausura.

Here are the Power Rankings for Week 6:

1. PUMAS UNAM (+2)

Upstart Pumas shock Tigres, America flying high and Chivas a mess

Alejandro Arribas celebrates after scoring a goal for Pumas in a win against Tigres.
Alejandro Arribas celebrates after scoring a goal for Pumas in an upset win over Tigres.

It was arguably the best weekend of action so far in the Liga MX 2018 Clausura, with a total of 25 goals scored, seven red cards and some surprising outcomes.

Here are five takeaways from the fifth round of matches.

1. Alustiza masterclass downs Tigres

Matias Alustiza was majestic for Pumas in the university team's 2-0 win over Tigres on Sunday.

In a sport with lower scoring than many others and in which individual moments can decide the result, it was Alustiza who produced to down the reigning...

Almeyda vs. Mohamed, Tigres meets improving Pachuca, America new faces

It seems players on Club America wanted to play a joke on ESPN's Marcelino Fernandez by making a 'bad pass' during his segment.

Potential Mexico managers clash in Guadalajara

If there is to be a change in the Mexican managerial hot seat after the World Cup, then two of the candidates to replace Juan Carlos Osorio will be going toe-to-toe in Guadalajara on Saturday night. Antonio Mohamed takes his Monterrey side to face Matias Almeyda's Chivas, in a battle that pits two Argentine friends with very differing footballing philosophies.

Mohamed's Monterrey are not afraid to be without the ball, to be more direct and hit on counters....

Chivas, Cruz Azul seek first wins as champions Tigres aim for progress

Chivas won the 2017 Clausura but failed to reach the playoffs in last year's Apertura.

After an exciting and somewhat surprising first week of the Clausura, Liga MX returns. Here is W2W4 this weekend.

Chivas vs. Cruz Azul is the game of the weekend

This is the first match of the season between two of the "big four" and it promises to be the game of the weekend.

Chivas comes into its 2018 Clausura home opener off the back of a positive 1-1 draw away at Toluca and Matias Almeyda's team has been handed the significance boost of being able to play Mexico international center-back Oswaldo...
