Cruzeiro sack coach Marcelo Oliveira after titles, hire Vanderlei Luxemburgo

Marcelo Oliveira brought two straight titles to Cruzeiro but a slow start this season sealed his fate.

SAO PAULO -- Cruzeiro have fired Marcelo Oliveira, the coach who led the team to the Brazilian league titles for the last two seasons, and hired Vanderlei Luxemburgo to him.

Tuesday's announcement came two days after a 2-1 loss at Figueirense in the fourth round of the Brazilian league left the Belo Horizonte club in second-to-last place in the 20-team standings with only one point.

It also was eliminated by River Plate in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores after a 3-0 loss at its Mineirao...

Copa Libertadores: River Plate stun Cruzeiro to reach semis

River Plate celebrate the second goal as they progressed.

Argentinian giants River Plate crushed Cruzeiro 3-0 in Brazil to storm into the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores.

Uruguayan midfielder Carlos Sanchez levelled the tie on aggregate in the 19th minute with a right-footed strike and defender Jonathan Maidana made it 2-0 by heading home a Rodrigo Rojas corner just before half-time.

Colombia striker Teofilo Gutierrez sealed the win six minutes...

There were 1-0 wins for Emelec of Ecuador over Tigres of Mexico, Santa Fe of Colombia over Internacional of Brazil and for Guarani of Paraguay over Racing of Argentina. But Brazilian side Cruzeiro's 1-0 win over River Plate of Argentina has much more value. Cruzeiro were the away side. All the others were...

Brazil introduces plan to renegotiate club debts, force fiscal responsibility

Fans of the Brazilian domestic game have had little to celebrate given the clubs' poor management over the years.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's government wants to let football clubs renegotiate $1.2 billion in debts but in the process force them to start spending more wisely.

The measure signed by President Dilma Rousseff on Thursday gives Brazilian clubs up to 20 years to pay what they owe to the federal government. In exchange, they must manage their finances more professionally.

Congress still has to approve the measure.

In order to take advantage of the government's favorable conditions, clubs have to commit...
