Copa Libertadores pits Brazil vs. Argentina in intriguing last-16 ties

Robinho and Atletico Mineiro are fancied to beat Racing but the Copa Lib is known for its unpredictability.

On Wednesday the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores really gets serious: three games, five former champions and two big clashes between clubs from Brazil and Argentina. It's perhaps surprising that all of this is coming so soon, in the round of 16 rather than in the quarterfinals. Come the end of next week, some major challengers will have left the competition.

Heavyweights from Argentina, Brazil make Copa Libertadores knockouts

Atletico Mineiro have been the most impressive of the Brazilian sides thus far.

Going into the penultimate week of action in the group phase of the Copa Libertadores, five teams had already booked their place in the knockout rounds -- Pumas and Toluca of Mexico, Atletico Nacional of Colombia, Nacional of Uruguay, and Deportivo Tachira, the first Venezuelan side to make it through since 2009.

Corinthians' Tite: I don't want to succeed Dunga as Brazil coach

ESPN FC's Craig Burley reacts to the latest FIFA rankings, which see Argentina move to No. 1.

The ESPN FC crew discuss Brazil's draw with Paraguay and the absence of Thiago Silva.
Uruguay's Luis Suarez speaks to his side's need to change their entire game plan following Brazil's two early goals in their 2-2 draw.

Corinthians manager Tite has said he would never negotiate to replace Dunga as Brazil coach, criticising the media for suggesting he take over.

The pressure on Dunga has intensified after last month's round of 2018 World Cup qualifying matches brought draws against Paraguay and Uruguay.

The Selecao are sixth in the CONMEBOL qualifying table, but 12 matches remain in which to avoid the threat of missing a World Cup for the first time in their history.

Shooting death prompts away fans to be banned from derbies in Sao Paulo

Palmeiras fans
Palmeiras fans -- and all other away supporters -- will not be able to attend city derbies for the rest of the year.

Sao Paulo police have banned away fans from attending city derbies until the end of the year after a bystander was shot dead on Sunday as Palmeiras and Corinthians fans battled ahead of their state championship game.

The decision was taken by the state's military police in conjunction with the Paulista State Football Federation and public prosecutors.

"This will avoid the need for the military police to escort organised fan groups, which will allow a reinforcement of policing around the stadiums,"...

NYCFC adds Steven Mendoza on loan from Corinthians with option to buy

The ESPN FC crew preview NYC FC versus Toronto in the MLS and discuss NYC FC's need for defensive improvements this season.

New York City FC acquired Steven Mendoza on loan from Brazilian club Corinthians on Friday, hours after trading midfielder Andrew Jacobson to the Vancouver Whitecaps for targeted allocation money.

Mendoza, 23, spent last season on loan in the Indian Super League, where he won the Golden Boot and helped Chennaiyin FC to the league title.

NYCFC has an option to buy Mendoza on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

Already at the maximum of three designated players...
