The Chicago Fire have signed Dax McCarty to a two-year contract extension.

Dax McCarty has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Chicago Fire until at least 2019, the club announced on Thursday.

McCarty, 30, joined the Fire from New York Red Bulls in a shock move ahead of the 2017 season after spending more than five years with the Red Bulls.

The new deal is guaranteed until 2019 and Chicago has an option for the 2020 season.

Chicago Fire center-back Joao Meira will not return to the MLS club next season, he announced on Saturday.

The Portuguese defender started 27 games for Chicago this season, partnering with Johan Kappelhof to help spark a remarkable turnaround from a year earlier, but he has played his last game for the Fire.

Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez has called keeping Designated Player Bastian Schweinsteiger at the club for the 2018 season is "a priority."

Schweinsteiter, 33, left Manchester United to sign a one-year deal with the Fire in March.

Former U.S. internationals and Chicago Fire teammates Chris Rolfe and Justin Mapp both took to social media to express gratitude to fans, teammates and family in announcing their respective retirements on Thursday.
