ISL wrap: Captain Fantastic saves BFC, Hyderabad welcome Albert Roca

A new year, a new decade, but some predictable stories. ESPN brings you the best of the week from the 2019-20 ISL season.

Star of the week

Sunil Chhetri

In the league's first match of 2020, Bengaluru FC were extremely poor against a Goa side that passed them off the park for the vast majority of the game. Yet, BFC had Sunil Chhetri, and that made all the difference. Two chances, two masterful finishes, three points.

In Bengaluru's second match, they were middling-to-alright against an average...

ISL wrap: The Krishna-Williams show, Hyderabad blues and more

Star of the week

Roy Krishna and David Williams

No. 1 and No. 3 in the goal-scoring charts, 10 of ATK's 15 goals amongst them, Roy Krishna and David Williams have been, without much of a doubt, the signings of the season.

They share a remarkable understanding of each other's games, work tirelessly to ensure Antonio Lopez Habas' bespoke 3-5-2 works both defensively and offensively, and both seem to be enjoying their time in India.

As NorthEast United found out this week -- while getting swatted...

ISL wrap: Costa outsmarts Cuadrat, sizzling Goa and more

Star of the week

Mumbai City FC

Before Sunday, Bengaluru FC had gone 637 days without being beaten in a league game at home. A scrappy, 94th minute, Rowllin Borges goal made sure that remarkable run did not extend to 638.

Much maligned for his 'functional' style of play, Jorge Costa out-tactic-ed (as Sam Allardyce would have put it) Carles Cuadrat on the day. As poor as Bengaluru were, Mumbai were smart, used the ball well, and deserved the three points that puts an end to a run of six games without...

Chennaiyin FC appoint Owen Coyle as Head Coach

Chennaiyin FC have appointed 53-year-old Scotsman Owen Coyle as their new Head Coach. He replaces John Gregory as the head coach of the ISL club.

Coyle, a former English Premier League manager with Burnley and Bolton Wanderers, joins CFC on a contract till the end of the season.

"I am incredibly proud to join Chennaiyin FC as Head Coach. It will be my immense privilege to join a club with so much success already in its early history with two ISL titles. I believe we possess a squad with great potential...

The ISL Wrap: Classic Castel, Goa's discipline woes and more

Star of the week

Sergio Castel

Two goals in two games to earn Jamshedpur FC a win at FC Goa and a draw against NorthEast United this week. The 24-year-old forward, on loan from Atletico Madrid, has hit the ground running in India. Combining clinical finishing with tireless, endless running, Castel has been putting on some exceptional displays of classical centre forward play.

With the teams having all played six games, Jamshedpur are tied on top of the table with ATK, with Castel scoring five of...
