Chapecoense's dignified fight against relegation, in the shadow of disaster, is as admirable as their rise

Marcio Araujo looks on during Chapecoense's Serie A match against Botafogo.
Three years after their air disaster, Chapecoense are on the brink of relegation.

Chapecoense are sipping at the last-chance saloon on Wednesday.

With 10 rounds to go in the Brazilian championship, they are deep in relegation danger. Last week, goalkeeper Joao Ricardo left the field declaring that the "Chapecoense supporters will have to get used to the idea of playing in the second division." At the weekend, Marquinhos Santos, their third coach of the campaign, admitted that "we can't try to deceive our fans. We have to be realistic. The situation is very difficult, but at...

Rafael Henzel, a radio reporter who survived the crash that killed most of the Chapecoense soccer team in 2016, died of a heart attack on Tuesday, the Brazilian club said. He was 45.

Globo reported that Henzel collapsed while playing football in the southern city of Chapeco and despite being rushed to hospital he died soon after.

A highly respected figure in the area, Henzel returned to his radio job after recovering from the plane crash.

"Throughout his brilliant career, Rafael told the story of...

After the horrific tragedy of two years ago, Chapecoense's first-divison fate will come down to the final game of the season.

It is precisely two years since the Chapecoense plane crash, when almost the entire team and coaching staff of the little Brazilian club lost their lives.

In such circumstances, it seems crass in the extreme to state that Chapecoense are fighting for their first-division survival this weekend. Such metaphors lose all their meaning when measured against true tragedy.

Nevertheless, there is a connection. Because all of the emotion engendered by the disaster needs to be channelled somehow. And the...

Authorities find flight crew negligent in Chapecoense crash

Chapecoense

Fuel shortages and negligence caused a plane crash that killed 71 people in 2016, including most members of Brazilian football team Chapecoense, Colombian authorities have concluded.

The plane crashed on Nov. 28, 2016, on a mountain in Colombia just a few miles from Medellin. On Friday, Colombia's Civil Aviation Authority presented the findings of a 15-month inquiry.

Officials say crew members ignored a low-fuel warning when the plane was about 40 minutes from its intended destination.

Instead of...

Chapecoense give crash survivor Alan Ruschel extended deal

SAO PAULO -- Brazil side Chapecoense have extended the contract of defender Alan Ruschel, who has recently returned to action after the air crash that killed 19 of his teammates.

Ruschel's new contract is valid until the end of 2020, club director Rui Costa said on Wednesday.

The crash on Nov. 28, 2016, in Colombia killed 71 people. Ruschel, defender Neto, goalkeeper Jackson Follmann and journalist...
