The Absa Premiership table that does lie: Points per game log

The 2018-19 Absa Premiership season is shaping up to be an intriguing tussle for a trophy seemingly 'no-one wants' as none of the 16 teams in the elite league have managed to find any consistency to pull ahead in the title race.

The South African championship has almost exclusively been fought out between a handful of clubs in recent years, but this campaign any number could emerge from the pack with a good run of fixtures.

Just five points separate leaders Bidvest Wits in top spot and Free...

Goalless draw kicks off weekend action in the Premier Soccer League

A busy weekend of action in South Africa's Premier Soccer League began in unconvincing fashion on Friday as Maritzburg United and MTN8 cup winners Cape Town City played out a goalless draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

The result means both clubs have won only once in the new league campaign - Maritzburg in seven games and City in eight.

Both sides now also have seven points, still stuck in the bottom five places on the league table.

For City, clad in an unfamiliar all yellow away strip, it was their...

McCarthy admits dread ahead of greatest coaching triumph

Benni McCarthy admits feeling fear and dread, but has emerged with his first trophy as a head coach after securing the MTN8 title with Cape Town City on Saturday.

City defeated SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties after a goalless draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, a match in which the Mother City side dominated and should have wrapped up the result long before a shoot-out was needed.

It was also revenge for McCarthy and City after they were beaten on penalties by the same opposition, at the...

Peter Leeuwenburgh the hero as Cape Town City win MTN8

Dutch goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh proved the hero with two saves in the penalty shootout as Cape Town City claimed the MTN8 trophy with a 4-1 victory over SuperSport United following a 0-0 draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.

It was sweet revenge for City, who had lost on penalties in the 2017 decider to the same opposition at the same venue, but were by far the better side this time round.

They should have won the game inside the 90 minutes as they spurned a host of chances, before...

The rebirth of Patosi bodes well for Cape Town City

Ayanda Patosi has been a stand-out performer for Cape Town City this season and will take that excellent form into Saturday's MTN8 final against SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

City lost to SuperSport in the final of the same competition last season, but in a campaign where Patosi has targeted two pieces of silverware for the club, revenge is very much on their minds.

Patosi has been something of an enigma in South African football since he matured from the ASD...
