On Tuesday night the quarterfinal first legs of the Copa Libertadores got underway with a 2-0 win for a Brazilian club over opposition from Argentina, in a game where a VAR-induced red card had a significant impact.

On Wednesday the exact opposite took place. This time with much more controversy.

Carlos Tevez hints at Boca Juniors exit after being benched

Carlos Tevez said he is ready "to step to the side" after seeing his regular playing time drastically reduced at Boca Juniors.

Boca coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto left Tevez in the stands for Monday's Superliga 0-0 draw at Huracan, having benched the 34-year-old forward in a 2-0 defeat at Estudiantes in the previous round.

The former Manchester United and City forward travelled to Paraguay but is not expected to start against Libertad on Thursday in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 second leg.


Barcelona-Boca Juniors showcases South America's talent, the gap between domestic leagues

Malcom, Lionel Messi and Rafinha found the back of the net for Barcelona as they cruised to victory over Boca Juniors in the annual Gamper Trophy match.

It would, of course, be silly to draw conclusions from a single, gentle preseason friendly, disputed by two teams a little short of full strength, and which inevitably turned into a parade of second-half substitutions. Even so, Barcelona's 3-0 win Wednesday over Boca Juniors provides more evidence toward a clear conclusion: how rich South American football is, and how poor the continent's club game has become.

Boca Juniors were not disgraced -- and yet they could have lost by a much wider margin....
