New year, same old story for Ajax, Wits

Gavin Hunt adapting to new methods to revitalise Bidvest Wits

Gavin Hunt is constantly re-inventing himself to keep fresh in a game where he says he cannot afford to stick to his old ways but must learn to adapt to modern ways.

His mea culpa came this week when he spoke to reporters and was asked whether he had changed in any way after a horror last season for Bidvest Wits almost saw them relegated, just 12 months after being crowned champions in 2016.

The 54-year-old Hunt, who has won a record-equaling four league titles in his coaching career, can be taciturn,...

The Absa Premiership table that does lie: Points per game log

The 2018-19 Absa Premiership season is shaping up to be an intriguing tussle for a trophy seemingly 'no-one wants' as none of the 16 teams in the elite league have managed to find any consistency to pull ahead in the title race.

The South African championship has almost exclusively been fought out between a handful of clubs in recent years, but this campaign any number could emerge from the pack with a good run of fixtures.

Sundowns agree deal for Phakamani Mahlambi

Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed a deal with Egyptian giants Al Ahly over the transfer of Phakamani Mahlambi.

The 20-year-old Bafana Bafana forward will join the Brazilians for a reported $900 000 (R13.2-million), just one year and 15 games after moving to North Africa.

Bidvest Wits, who sold Mahlambi to Al Ahly, will receive more than R4-million as part of a sell-on clause inserted into the original agreement.

Sundowns are in desperate need of some firepower up-front. They have scored just three...

Change in mentality at Wits has provided spur for early season form

Bidvest Wits have started the new Absa Premiership season with three wins on the trot, but coach Gavin Hunt says they are playing no better than in their horror campaign last year when the side flirted with relegation.

Wits were league champions in the 2016-17 season, but then had a "meltdown", according to Hunt, before a switch in transfer policy to bring in players who had yet to win trophies, providing the necessary hunger, appears to be bearing fruit.

Late own goal hands Bidvest Wits shock win over Orlando Pirates

An own goal in the last 10 minutes allowed Bidvest Wits a 'snatch and grab' win away at Orlando Pirates for their third win in as many games at the start of the new season and top place in South Africa's Premier Soccer League.

New signing Hashim Domingo's clever play coming in from the flank and then playing a square ball off the legs of Gladwin Shitolo settled the outcome in a match in which Pirates had dominated.

It add to an away win last week at Kaizer Chiefs in what is a major turn around in...
