Besiktas sign Ryan Babel on free transfer after Deportivo deal expires

Ryan Babel spent the first half of the season at Deportivo La Coruna.

Besiktas have signed free agent Ryan Babel on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Babel, 30, spent the first half of the season at Deportivo La Coruna before his contract with the Spanish club expired on Dec. 31.

Deportivo had hoped the former Liverpool player would remain with the club until the end of the season, but he has opted to move to Besiktas, signing with the Turkish side until 2019.

Former Liverpool striker Ryan Babel has decided not to remain with Deportivo La Coruna after his contract expires on Dec. 31, while he has confirmed that he has received offers to sign for new clubs, including one from Besiktas.

Babel, 30, who joined Deportivo on Sept. 15 as a replacement for injured striker Joselu, has announced he is leaving the Spanish club.

Death toll from bombing near Besiktas' stadium rises to 44

The death toll from Saturday's bomb attacks outside Besiktas' stadium in Istanbul has risen to 44, with 149 wounded, Turkey's health minister has announced.

A car bomb was detonated close to a bus carrying riot police outside the Vodafone Arena around two hours after Besiktas' 2-1 win over Bursaspor and was quickly followed by a suicide bombing in nearby Macka Park.

The first government report on Saturday said 29 had died with 155 wounded.

Manchester United face St Etienne in Europa League, Spurs play Gent

The first legs will take place on Feb. 16, with the second legs on Feb. 23.

Manchester United will take on St Etienne in the Europa League's round of 32, while Tottenham Hotspur will face Gent and Villarreal have been drawn against Roma.

United, who finished second in their group behind Fenerbahce, come up against a side sitting eighth in Ligue 1 as they attempt to win the trophy for the first time in their history.

Explosions in Istanbul near Besiktas' Vodafone Arena leave 38 dead

ISTANBUL -- Turkey declared a national day of mourning, launched a full investigation and began to bury its dead Sunday after twin blasts in Istanbul killed 38 people and wounded 155 others near a soccer stadium.
