Chivas earn late Clasico Tapatio win versus neighboring rivals Atlas

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Chivas left it very late, but beat Atlas 1-0 in the Clasico Tapatio on Sunday, thanks to a 92nd-minute goal from center-back Jair Pereira that sent the 40,000 fans in Estadio Chivas wild.

With their 3-0 victory against Puebla, Chivas Guadalajara have gone from relegation candidates to Liguilla contenders.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Chivas and Atlas come into Sunday's Clasico Tapatio in very different shape.

Atlas captain and leader Rafa Marquez admitted Friday that he is so embarrassed by his team's abysmal form this Clausura 2016 that he doesn't show his face much in Guadalajara these days. His team sit in last place in the Liga MX Clausura table and any thoughts that "El Kaiser de Michoacan" would inspire his team to glory with his return last December have fallen decidedly flat.

Rafa Marquez is back in Mexico's squad despite struggling with Atlas

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Rafa Marquez gives the stare. Having just been asked if he is satisfied with how things have gone for him and his fellow Atlas defenders of late, the club legend and captain pauses and sharply answers: "Not good."

It's a fair assessment. Atlas have the second worst defensive record in Liga MX in 2016 and Marquez's return to the club that gave him the initial push to begin a career that took him to the heights of Champions League glory with Barcelona has been anything but glorious.
