Inconsistent Atlas deliver an unexpected win over Atletico Mineiro

Atlas became the sixth Mexican team to win in Brazil in the Copa Libertadores after beating Atletico Mineiro 1-0.

Guadalajara's Atlas are doing things "A lo Atlas" (loosely "Atlas style") in the Copa Libertadores 2015 so far, winning when it should lose and losing when it should be winning.

The phrase used to be a bit of an insult from rival fans, mainly from Chivas, to describe the plethora of ways Atlas would find to mess up seemingly positive situations. Yet recently the club's new owners in Grupo Salinas (they purchased the club in late 2013) had the bright idea of reclaiming the phrase using the hashtag...

Kannemann's brilliance, referee scrutiny headline Liga MX week five

ESPN FC's Alejandro Moreno explains Ronaldinho has become more a luxury player in the latter stages of his career rather than a first-team focal point, following the news that Queretaro coaches created a special training program for the Brazilian.

1. Cruz Azul's defense holds strong

A center-back pairing of Francisco "Maza" Rodriguez and Julio Cesar "Cata" Dominguez, combined with Gerardo Torrado's screening in a holding role just in front of the pair, plus Jesus Corona's exploits in goal, screams solidity and experience for Cruz Azul.

After 17 weeks of league play, the 2014 Apertura playoffs are set to begin. Thursday sees Monterrey meet Atlas and Chiapas take on Toluca -- here are five things to watch for:

1. Dorlan Pabon

Of Monterrey's 23 goals scored during the regular season, 11 came from Pabon. Along with his goals, the striker also collected five assists as well, meaning that only seven of his side's goals came about without his help. Thus, a good performance from the Colombian striker will be vital in their match against...

Introducing Mexico's new first-timers: Javier Guemez and Arturo Gonzalez

Javier Guemez, left, and Arturo Gonzalez, right, hope to make an impression in their potential Mexico senior national team debuts.

As mentioned before, Miguel "Piojo" Herrera has made gradual and conservative changes for Mexico with his call-ups. The manager has recognized the need to field a strong squad while also assimilating new players into the national team.

For this week's friendlies against Honduras and Panama, Herrera decided to utilize two new players for El Tri -- 22-year-old Javier Guemez of Club Tijuana and 20-year-old Arturo Gonzalez of Atlas.

Guemez has been a key player for Xolos since joining the squad a little...
