Second-half goals from James Chester and substitute Scott Hogan gave Aston Villa a 2-0 Sky Bet Championship victory at the DW Stadium that pushes Wigan closer to relegation.

The hosts were being led for the first time by interim boss Graham Barrow, but were unable to improve on their miserable home form that contributed to Warren Joyce losing his job at the start of the week.

Wigan should have been ahead inside 15 minutes, but, after reading a short back pass from Mile Jedinak, Omar Bogle could only...

Aston Villa dented Sheffield Wednesday's play-off hopes with a 2-0 Championship win thanks to two goals from striker Jonathan Kodjia.

It was a big setback for Wednesday who played with only 10 men for most of the second half after Vincent Sasso received a red card

The sending off of Sasso for a heavy tackle on Conor Hourihane on the halfway line effectively killed off any hopes of them completing the double over Villa.

The Frenchman, who had been recruited from the Portuguese club Braga, could have...

Tommy Smith ensured Huddersfield kept up the pressure on the Championship's top two with a 1-0 victory over resurgent Aston Villa.

Stand-in skipper Smith drilled home his fourth goal of the season as Huddersfield hit back after a morale-sapping defeat to leaders Newcastle on Saturday.

Villa were on the rise after three successive victories and boss Steve Bruce looked set to inflict more damage on his former club's hopes of automatic promotion.

Town, only beaten twice in the previous 16 league games,...

Aston Villa finally ended their away day blues with a deserved 2-0 victory at Rotherham.

Steve Bruce's men, who have addressed their home form over the last week, now registered their first win on the road of 2017 as Will Vaulks' second-half own goal and a Jonathan Kodjia strike earned the three points at New York Stadium.

That was their third win in eight days which puts a much better complexion on the league table, with Villa now looking towards the top half rather than a potential relegation fight.

Leandro Bacuna receives his marching orders during Aston Villa's game against Derby County.
Leandro Bacuna receives his marching orders in Aston Villa's win against Derby County.

Aston Villa's Leandro Bacuna will serve a six-match suspension following his sending-off against Derby for barging an assistant referee, the Football Association has announced.

Bacuna, 25, was dismissed by referee Andre Marriner in the 94th minute of the 1-0 victory over Derby in the Championship last Saturday for shoving assistant Mark Russell after a throw-in decision went against him.

A statement from the Football Association on Friday morning read: "Aston Villa's Leandro Bacuna will serve a...
