Roma want Arsenal to help pay Mkhitaryan salary to complete transfer - sources

Roma want Arsenal to pay a chunk of Henrikh Mkhitaryan's £180,000-a-week wage to complete a permanent move, sources have told ESPN.

The 31-year-old is surplus to requirements at Emirates Stadium and wants a switch to Italy, having joined the Serie A side on loan in September.

The two clubs are yet to agree a fee with sources telling ESPN that the Gunners are holding out for around £10 million.

AS Roma want to keep Manchester United loanee Chris Smalling for at least another season, manager Paulo Fonseca has told ESPN.

The defender has settled well in the Italian capital since he arrived on loan last summer and Fonseca said that Smalling wants to stay at the Italian club beyond this season, with his loan deal set to expire at the end of the campaign. Sources have told ESPN that while a deal has yet been agreed to make his move permanent, Roma are confident it can be done.

AS Roma's players and coaching staff have volunteered to give up their wages for the remainder of the 2019-20 season to help steer the club through the coronavirus pandemic.

The Serie A side announced on Sunday that its players will forego four months' salary and will collectively make up the difference in non-playing staff's wages whose salaries were affected when they were placed on the Italian government's social safety net scheme.
