Monaco secured Champions League qualification thanks to a 2-0 victory over Montpellier at Stade Louis II.

The hosts needed three points to ensure that they would play in Europe's premier competition next term with Nice waiting in the wings for any slip-ups from Les Rouges et Blancs.

But Ivan Cavaleiro settled the nerves when he netted in the third minute, slotting home at the near post after good work by Nabil Dirar on the right wing.

Radamel Falcao: Monaco want me back despite River Plate interest

ESPN FC's Alexis Nunes and Shaka Hislop assess where Radamel Falcao will be headed next season.

On-loan Chelsea forward Radamel Falcao has said Monaco want him to return to the principality next season in spite of interest from his former club River Plate.

Falcao, 30, has started just one Premier League game during an injury-disrupted season, having also disappointed when he was on loan at Manchester United in the previous campaign.

Lyon target return to days of winning Ligue 1 after beating Monaco to second

Lyon will be playing in the Champions League next season.

Lyon's players backed the club to win the Ligue 1 title next season after they secured Champions League football with a thumping win over Monaco.

It was billed as a winners-take-all clash between the sides in second and third and that only ever looked like being Lyon once Rachid Ghezzal gave them the lead in the third minute.

They were four up after 35 minutes, with a hat trick from Alexandre Lacazette and two from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa earning them a crushing 6-1 victory.

Alexandre Lacazette scored his first hat-trick of the season as Lyon all but secured second place in Ligue 1 with a resounding 6-1 demolition of 10-man Monaco.

A surprise brace from former Newcastle defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Rachid Ghezzal's earlier opener ensured victory.

And with their goal difference now superior by 22, it as good as ensured ensured Lyon's automatic place in the Champions League group stages.

Lyon, Monaco set to do battle in Ligue 1 for vital Champions League place

The Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Lyon's new and beautiful stadium, has had a pretty good life so far. Since opening in January, Lyon have played nine matches there and have yet to lose, winning seven and drawing two while scoring 24 goals and conceding just six.

There have been a few boring encounters, some more exciting ones and, more importantly, back on Feb. 28, the game of the season. A raucous crowd of 56,661 bore witness to the Lyonnais inflicting Paris Saint-Germain's first league defeat of...
