Liverpool beat Hoffenheim in UCL playoff first leg; CSKA win late

Hoffenheim scored a late goal to give them a puncher's chance against Liverpool heading to Anfield for the second leg.

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first Liverpool goal as Jurgen Klopp's side took a 2-1 lead in their Champions League qualifier against Hoffenheim.

The Liverpool-born full-back, deputising for the injured Nathaniel Clyne, opened the scoring in the 35th minute by curling home a free kick from outside the box on his European debut.

Liverpool added a second 13 minutes from time when James Milner's cross was deflected in by fellow substitute Havard Nordtveit.

Tommy Oar is set for a return to Europe after Brisbane Roar agreed to sell the former Socceroo to Cypriot club APOEL FC.

It's understood Oar will fly out from Brisbane on Monday night for a medical with APOEL, who have triggered Oar's €350,000 ($A514,772) release clause and need only to reach personal terms to secure the 25-year-old for next season.

APOEL Nicosia fans engaged in violent clashes during the team's Cypriot Cup quarterfinal.

NICOSIA, Cyprus -- Cyprus police say two men have been arrested following violent clashes in the stands during a Cypriot Cup quarterfinal match with light injuries for four policemen.

Police said Thursday that officers had to use tear gas to subdue APOEL Nicosia fans, who threw plastic seats at them and let off flares, as they accompanied firefighters trying to put out a fire started in a stadium washroom.

The two arrested men, aged 21 and 37, also suffered minor injuries.
