Van Basten and the greatest European Championship goal ever scored

Dutch striker Marco van Basten scored the greatest goal of the European Championships, in 1988 against the Soviet Union.
Dutch striker Marco van Basten scored the greatest goal of the European Championships, in 1988 against the Soviet Union.

Arnold Muhren's cross was wafting slowly, aimlessly, over the Soviet Union's penalty area. Muhren, then 37, had a crafty left foot and had been aiming to supply Dutch striker Marco van Basten at the back post. But he knew he had overhit this one.

It was the 54th minute of the final of the 1988 European Championship, and Holland was beating the Soviets 1-0. I was an 18-year-old Holland supporter, sitting behind the goal in Munich's Olympic Stadium (amid many empty seats) and wasn't expecting anything...

Rafael van der Vaart does not see his future at Real Betis

Gus Poyet explains during his presentation as the new head coach of Real Betis how his approach differs from that of Gary Neville and David Moyes.

Real Betis midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has admitted that he would not rule out a return to Ajax in the summer transfer window and reiterated that he has no plans to retire.

The Dutch midfielder's second stint at Bundesliga club Hamburg came to an end last summer when they chose not to offer the Netherlands international a new contract. He then returned to Spain, where he had previously played for Real Madrid, and signed for newly-promoted Betis on a three-year deal.

Ajax hire Peter Bosz to replace the departing Frank de Boer

Loans and criticism aside, much of the credit for Vitesse's success is owed to their innovative manager, Peter Bosz.
Ajax have announced that Maccabi Tel Aviv manager Peter Bosz has signed a deal to replace Frank de Boer at the Eredivisie club.

AMSTERDAM -- Ajax has signed Peter Bosz as their new coach, replacing Frank de Boer who announced earlier this month he was leaving the club after nearly six years in which he won four Dutch league titles.

Bosz, a former player and technical director at Ajax's arch rival Feyenoord, is leaving Maccabi Tel Aviv to join the Amsterdam club on a three-year contract.

In a statement late Tuesday, Bosz said it is an honour to join Ajax. He said: "I am very ambitious and so is Ajax."

What's next for Frank de Boer? Everton? Valencia? Or elsewhere?

After weeks of speculation, it's now official: Frank de Boer has left his position as Ajax manager.

The announcement comes just days after Ajax wasted the chance to win the Eredivisie title on the final day of the season as a 1-1 draw with De Graafschap saw rivals PSV Eindhoven claim the prize.

The Amsterdam club, who won four titles in five-and-a-half years under De Boer, have not yet decided who will replaced De Boer. Former Vitesse manager Peter Bosz is seen as the prime candidate, but Clarence...
