Ajax reveal plan to rename stadium after Johan Cruyff

Dutch giants Ajax are planning to rename their stadium after Johan Cruyff.

The club announced the decision on what would have been the former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands great's 70th birthday. Cruyff, who won three European Cups during his playing days with Ajax, died in March 2016 after losing his battle with lung cancer.

A club statement on Tuesday confirmed the intention to change the name of the Amsterdam ArenA to the Johan Cruijff Arena -- using the Dutch spelling.

Nick Viergever and Amin Younes netted crucial goals in extra time to see Ajax through on away goals against Schalke.

Despite carrying over a 2-0 lead, it looked very much like Ajax would be crashing out of the Europa League when Schalke cancelled the deficit within the first hour of the second leg.

Things then looked increasingly bleak for the Eredivisie side when they had Joel Veltman sent off in the 80th minute, and then Schalke scored again in the opening stages of extra time.

However, Ajax eventually pulled themselves together with two late, late goals to snatch a 4-3 aggregate victory from the jaws of defeat...
