Gus Poyet named coach of Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua

Former Real Betis and Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has been named the new coach of Shanghai Shenhua, the club announced on Tuesday.

Poyet, who was removed from his position at the helm of Real Betis in November, will take Shanghai into next season's Chinese Super League and the Asian Champions League qualifying rounds after the club finished the just-completed campaign in fourth place.

He will replace Gregorio Manzano after the Spaniard's contract was not renewed.

The ex-Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday and will meet the players and officials of the club on Friday. He will be joined by his coaching staff, assistants Mauricio Taricco and Charlie Oatway as well as goalkeeping coach Andy Beasley.

Manzano left at the end of the season after a disagreement with Shanghai's owners over the club's targets for next year.
