Andre Villas-Boas named new Shanghai SIPG boss as Eriksson goes

Andre Villas-Boas has replaced former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson as the manager of Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.

The club announced the departure of Eriksson after "friendly discussions" and confirmed that Villas-Boas, once of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, would succeed him.

Speaking at a news conference to confirm his appointment, Villas-Boas said his aim was to wrest the Super League title away from Guangzhou Evergrande, who have won it for six successive seasons.

"It's a different challenge in my career," he said. "Our focus will be to put a team together that is stronger, and most of all to bring joy to our fans with the Chinese championship next year."

SIPG general manager Sui Guoyang said Villas-Boas, whose most recent club job was at Zenit St Petersburg, did not confirm the length of his contract but said it was for more than a year.

A statement said club officials believe the 39-year-old "can further enrich the team's tactics" and also wished Eriksson well for the future.

The Swede had been under pressure as his side crashed out of the AFC Champions League after a 5-0 second leg defeat to South Korean club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
